Madagascar 2 is coming out on Friday and since it’s all about animals, I got to thinking of who some of the characters’ “book version” counterparts could be.
I was a little bummed that I wasn’t able to match up any of the characters to the Redwall series. I think Redwall took place somewhere around Scotland/Western Europe (where Brian Jacques is from), so the species of animals there are quite different from the animals native to Madagascar! But who knows — maybe we’ll see new species in the new movie!
Alex, the Lion:
Well, this one was obvious — the most kick-butt lion in all of literary history is Aslan, from Chronicles of Narnia series.
Gloria, the Hippo:
Gloria is the glue that holds their eclectic group of friends together — so naturally I thought of Owen the Hippo, who is best friends with Mzee the Tortoise! I wonder if there will be a tortoise in the movie . . . Are there tortoises in Madagascar?
Melman, the Giraffe:
The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by one of my favorite authors, Roald Dahl.
Marty, the Zebra
At first I was going to cheat a little and cite The Black Stallion, but here’s one: Dr. Seuss’ On Beyond Zebra!
The Penguins: Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and the Private
Well, Mr. Popper’s Penguins of course. If they were delivered in a package on my doorstep, they’d break free pretty quickly! Mr. Popper’s penguins eventually return to the South Pole — but I’m pretty sure Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and the Private don’t want to return to the Central Park Zoo, especially since they think it’s “unnatural” and broke out in the first place.
Julien and Maurice, Lemurs:
I’m not personally familiar with that many books about lemurs, but you’d be surprised what you’ll find in an online search . . . Maybe I’ll pick up The Adventures of Larry the Lemur someday.
Well, Curious George is actually a monkey, so he doesn’t count. So are the monkeys in The Twits. Does anyone know any books that specifically have chimps in them? Because they are awfully smart, and should get the recognition!
