Welcome to Scholastic Booktalks where we recommend brand new Scholastic books that we think you will love. Today's booktalk is: The Clockwork Three by Matthew Kirby.
In a town full of secrets and hidden treasures, three people come together and unmask the heart of the town. Meet Hannah, Frederick and Giuseppe.
12-year-old Hannah has been forced to drop out of school and work as a maid at the Gilbert Hotel. Hannah's father is extremely sick, and she is the only one in her family old enough to work. Perhaps she will find the hidden treasure rumored to be in the hotel and be able to return to school.
Frederick was abandoned by his mother when he was a baby. After being rescued from the horrible orphanage by Mr. Branch, Frederick became an apprentice to the clockmaker. He is eager to make journeyman and become an independent clockmaker. And Frederick believes that his top-secret project will help him earn his freedom.
11-year-old Giuseppe is anxious to return to Italy, his home country. Giuseppe has been forced to play his violin to earn money for his padrone, Stephano. If Giuseppe doesn't earn enough money, Stephano beats him and throws him in a dark basement full of rats. After finding a beautiful green violin floating in the ocean, Giuseppe realizes that he can now earn much more money and buy a ticket back to Italy.
When the mysterious Madame Pomeroy and her tall, Russian male companion, Yakov, come to town, the children's lives intertwine. They realize that in order to accomplish what they each want, they need to work together. Will Hannah find the treasure? Will Frederick's top secret project give him independence? And will Giuseppe break free and return to Italy? Find out in The Clockwork Three!
