Taj Mahal Fun Facts

Did you know these true facts about this domed wonder in Agra, India?tajmahal

  • The Mogul emperor had the Taj Mahal built as a mausoleum for his beloved wife when she died in 1631. He wanted to honor her by creating the most beautiful building in the world. What a guy!
  • The name Taj Mahal comes from Mumtaz Mahal which means “Chosen of the Palace.” This was the nickname given to the emperor’s wife because she was his favorite . . . the Chosen of the Palace. Get it?
  • It was completed in 1648 after 17 years of construction. More than 20,000 laborers worked on it.
  • The tombs of the emperor and his wife lie side by side in the inner chamber enclosed by a screen of pierced marble. The screen is decorated with delicate designs of lilies and poppies, and is inlaid with gemstones.
  • The Taj Mahal is famous for its glistening white marble, but it is starting to turn yellow because of pollution, so in 1993, the Indian government ordered 228 of the most polluting factories to close.
  • Security is so tight when you visit the Taj Mahal, you are not even allowed to bring in books or newspapers! That would be a problem for me. I don’t go anywhere without a book!

Do you think the Taj Mahal is the most beautiful building in the world? Let us know in the Comments!

The Taj Mahal is beautiful. I just hope the Taj Mahal will be beautiful in the future. There is a lot of pollution. This is turning the Taj Mahal yellow.

I love the Taj Mahal and what it stands for! What a sweet guy! It is so sad that monuments like these are being destroyed due to our careless polutions. We need to do everything we can to preserve these wonders of the world for future generations. It’s one of those things, if we don’t save it now, it will just be another picture in a history book for future generations. Who’s with me!?
