Allie Finkle #4: Stage Fright Sneak Peek

Allie4_130 So I just read the very first chapter of Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls, Book 4: Stage Fright by Meg Cabot, and if you're an Allie Finkle fan, you certainly won't be let down. Even reading the first fifteen pages, I already see Allie's cute wit, and I get a sense that deep down inside she wants to be a star! I mean, who wouldn't want to be a celebrity? I'd take being a local celebrity!

I found it interesting that the book starts with a rule (No, I'm not going to give it away!) that basically acknowledges the importance of giving compliments. Allie certainly isn't a stranger to giving herself compliments either. Some people might call it bragging, but I think she's just confident. However, I wonder if this first rule is going to be a running theme throughout the book. Even if someone makes a complete fool out of herself or totally messes up, shouldn't you always make that person feel better anyway?

That's just my guess regarding the theme of the book. However, in order to know for sure what is really going to happen to Allie, I'll have to read Stage Fright in its entirety when it comes out on September 15th.

Oh and since when is Allie into 1980's comic books? The Voltron reference was awesome!

Visit us in NY without leaving your computer!

Scholastic_130 If you're a regular reader of Ink Splot 26, you know that the Scholastic headquarters are in NYC -- whether it's because you read about Miranda Cosgrove or Keke Palmer visiting the Scholastic Store, watched the Allie Finkle Super Sleepover webcast or the 39 Clues webcast (both of which were broadcast from our auditorium), saw the Presidential Portraits or the Harry Potter Read-a-thon that took place in our lobby, or caught a glimpse of our cafeteria at the Inkdeath release event. But I'm betting most of you have never been here. And our friends at On Our Minds (a Scholastic blog for adults) guessed the same about their readers. So they did something about it -- they filmed two mini-video tours of the office, which they're letting us share with you!

The tour goes by quick — and believe me, when I say quick, I mean quick! So keep your eyes peeled for (1) the outside of the building, (2) the lobby, (3) the Scholastic Store, (4) the lobby (again), (5) the escalators, (6) reception, (7) The Red Bar (our coffee shop), (8) the library, (9) reception (again), (10) the Resource Room, (11) offices, (12) the elevators, and finally (13) the Greenhouse (our cafeteria) and its very pretty view.

I told you it was fast!

If you want a (just a little bit slower) tour, On Our Minds also filmed a video to highlight all of the big spaces that we use to have meetings, assemblies, and parties. And this time, I don't need to call out what you're looking at because there's a famous big, red dog doing it for me.

I hope you enjoyed the video tours. If there's anything you want to see more of, let us know in the comments and maybe Ink Splot 26 will have to arrange a video tour of our own!

Sneak Peek: The Roar by Emma Clayton

Theroar_130 Next month, there's a new book coming out that you are going to want to read. It's The Roar by Emma Clayton. It's a sci-fi thriller that takes place in a future where people live entirely without nature or animals. Years back, all of the animals were ravaged with a plague that made them attack humans. So a huge wall was built all around Europe and America to keep animals out. Twins Mika and Ellie have spent their entire lives behind the wall, and they've never seen an animal outside of books. And then Ellie is kidnapped.

The book opens a year after Ellie's been kidnapped, as she escapes from a space station with a pet monkey. Her captor, Mal Gorman, has been training her for something big and has just told her "The Secret." What secret? Well, I don't know. All I've gotten to read so far is the Chapter 1 sneak peek, and it doesn't say, but it certainly sounds sinister.

I could tell you more about the sneak peek, but you can read it for yourself right here:

If you're as intrigued as I am, you can get to know the author in this behind-the-scenes video interview:

Sneak Peek: Allie Finkle Book 3!

Allie3_130 You dressed Allie up for the holidays on the Allie Finkle site. But now winter break is over, and Allie is going back to school just like the rest of us (or, well, work in my case). In Best Friends and Drama Queens (the third book in Meg Cabot's series, Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls) Allie's friend, Caroline, comes back from vacation with exciting news: there's going to be a new student in Allie's class!

Now, much to Allie's relief, she won't be the new girl anymore. But it turns out that Allie's excitement is premature. The new girl, Cheyenne (who's come all the way from Canada), starts bossing around everyone in the fourth grade. Soon Cheyenne has everyone, including Allies best friends, Caroline, Sophie, and Erica, believing that if they don't do what she says, they'll be exactly what Cheyenne accuses them of being — babies!

The book doesn't hit stores until next month. But as a special treat to ease your back-to-school blues, you can read the first chapter right here on The Splot:

I can't wait to read the rest of the book!

A Sneak Peek into Suburbia

Talesofoutersuburbia If you haven't checked out The Arrival, then you are missing out. It is a beautiful wordless book by Shaun Tan about the arrival of an immigrant man to a bizarre new world. Well, Shaun Tan has created another masterpiece called Tales from Outer Suburbia that publishes in February 2009. This collection of (sub)urban legends for ages 12 and up is a random walk through a strange and fantastical world. Tan's idiosyncratic drawings take mundane suburban life and give it an unconventional makeover. There are all kinds of stories:  some of them with clearly defined outcomes, and others that, in my opinion, are meant to be enjoyed for what they are, with no requisite moral lesson.

There is the story of Eric, for example, an unusual foreign exchange student. Eric had a tendency to sleep and study in the kitchen pantry. He kept to himself, and rarely had questions for his hosts. When he did ask something, it would be about an object or subject that his hosts took for granted. There is a picture of Eric looking curiously at the underside of a postage stamp, and pointing out the serial number on an electrical plug. His hosts would dismiss his strange demeanor as being a "cultural thing." Then, one day, Eric left with just a wave and a good-bye. His hosts didn't even know that he was leaving for good. He did leave them something though . . .

Then there's a story about a discontented family who always complained about their lives, until they found a secret inner courtyard in their house! The family started having picnics in their inner courtyard, and they enjoyed the privacy and the special secret that only their family knew about . . . or so they thought.

Another great story is about a place where every household has their own missile. They were just sitting there, in the backyard, waiting for the time when the government may need to use them. Eventually they became so commonplace that people started decorating their missiles. Soon everyone was painting their missile, or using it to grow plants, or store things.

The artwork in this book is stunning. Tan's style is such an eclectic mix of the real and surreal. Some illustrations are with color, some without, and some juxtapose vibrant hues against a shaded backdrop. The illustration about the inner courtyard looks like a painting that you might see at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! Shaun Tan has let his imagination run wild once again, and I love it! I hope you'll love this book as much as I do. What's the story that your imagination would tell about your neighborhood?
