A big round of applause to the Splotters who answered my Newbery trivia question correctly. You’re better than I am because when I wrote the question, I had a totally different book in mind!
I thought that the first Newbery winner was Hitty, Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field. Don’t ask me why; that’s just what I had always thought! Turns out that Hitty was the 1930 winner, so I was way off! [cheeks burn in shame]
So, what’s the correct answer? Maria was the first one to get it right: The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon, which won in 1922.
Congrats to Maria!
