Book Review: Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke

When you finish reading a book, you put it down and think that the journey of the story the author has created has come to an end. But what if you had the power to make every word that you read come to life right before your very eyes? This idea comes to fruition in a series by an amazing and imaginative writer Cornelia Funke. It begins with Inkheart and continues in Inkspell. Inkdeath is the final book in the series, and it brings the journey to an electrifying end.

In Inkdeath, Fenoglio's words take control of Mo and he becomes the Bluejay. The Bluejay makes Mo feel like he is invincible and it blinds him from seeing the danger that lies ahead with the Adderhead. Resa is beginning to feel like she is losing Mo to a bunch of words. Can she stop it before it is too late? Meggie is growing as a person and is learning that life is only going to get harder the longer that she, Resa, and Mo stay in the Inkworld. Meggie reads Orpheus into the Inkworld to bring back Dustfinger, but Orpheus has his own plans for the Inkworld, including making Farid work as his servant 24/7, reading treasure unicorns for the Milksop to hunt, and reading blue fairies into the Inkworld and making it his own. Each day, the Adderhead grows weaker and more pain comes into his body, making his heartbeat slower and slower, nearly leading to his death. Soon, the white women will come for him and for the rest of soldiers that the "fearless Bluejay" kills.

Even though Capricorn dies in Inkheart, that doesn't mean that Mortola doesn't want revenge on Mo and his daughter, Meggie. The Black Prince once again comes to rescue the day, and before you know it the Black Prince's life might also be gone. He could die protecting the ones that he has he loved and taken care of for so long. With Dustfinger gone, Roxanne is losing herself, and now most of all she needs to be able to stay strong! Elinor is getting awfully tired of just waiting for Mo, Resa, and Meggie, so she persuades Darius to read her and him into the Inkworld to seek out Mo, his wife, and his daughter. But what Elinor doesn't know is that the wonderful Inkworld that she has heard and read about that has stolen her family away isn't exactly the peaceful world it might seem. It is getting more and more dangerous for everyone to stay inside a book. Can Meggie, Mo, and Resa handle a bundle of danger, or will it be too much and will the adventure of this story stop without a happy ending?

I was breathless after I finished Inkdeath. The way that all three books in the series are written, you are able to have such a clear vision of what's happening in each chapter. Cornelia Funke immerses the reader into each book by her descriptive and intriguing language, taking you to places and times and characters that you never could have thought existed. Inkdeath leaves the reader thinking about what a fantastic series they have been able to read. I completely recommend this wonderful series for kids everywhere to read!

Meggie never deserved farid. Shes whiny, spoilt and all she cares about is herself… And her dad. Farid is amazing and I love him. She should of had someone better than meggie who wouldn’t ditch him after leading him on. He is waaayy too good for her

  2. G

Inkdeath was AMAZING but the real cherry on top would be meggie and farid ending uo together and doria dead because I despise him

I really enjoyed reading Inkheart, Inkspell, and of course Inkdeath. Cornelia has out done herself and is just amazing! In my opinion the movie was HORRIBLE!!!!! they didn;t follow the books and they could have made 3 AWESOME MOVIES!
I would like to recommend “Thief Lord” to anyone who loves the ink trilogy but may want a little smaller version. With all her books you can practically wipe your finger on the pages….pull your finger off….and FIND SUSPENSE AND PURE AWESOMENESS ON YOUR FINGER FROM HER BOOKS !!! :)

well, i loved inkdeath BUT what ever happens to maggie and doria also farid what do they chose and the story about doria, dose that come true???? i tink you need 1 more book just about maggie and doria farid could be in it too! :) but over all great book!

  5. jen

i think doria is a really kind person and really derserves meggie but farid on the other hand has already a relationship with meggie and doria broke in if doria had a relationship with her in ink heart ink spell it would be fine with me I would prefer meggie still staying with farid even though farid dies but mostly i prefer farid not to die and meggie staying with him poor farid

  9. Lavender Blue

What did I just read?! farid and Meggie break up and then farid dies….AGAIN?I just finished inkspell and now I know what will happen! But i am glad Dustfinger comes back. I cried so much when he died. I wish Fenglio would just be quiet! he is so annoying! Why do Meggie and Farid have to break up? Why? nooooooo

  10. Lavender Blue

Oh great!!!! This really stinks! Thanks for ruining the story for me guys!! Someone in my class told me Farid dies but I hoped he was wrong. And what did i read? Meggie and farid broke up?! Unbelievable! This is unheard of. i just finished Inkspell and now know what’s going to happen! nooooo

  11. Beccy

Inkdeath was awsome. Farid was a bit annoying because of the way he cheated on meggie with orpheus’s maids and he had no right not to like her being with doria to be honest.

  12. Audrey

WHAT?!?!? FARID AND MEGGIE BREAK UP AND THEN FARID DIES?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! just finished inkspell-gonna read inkdeath soon-FARID+MEGGIE :)

  13. J4z:)

I wish they would let me watch the movies of the Ink
series on the internet . Thankyou for not putting to many pictures in the book because its fun to imagine what the characters look like and it would be cool if u made a book called ” Ink soul’s”
    or something like that !

  14. J4z:)

    I Love the Ink books , I
really wanna see the movies :( please make more books I just finished Ink Spell
last night and I will hopefully get Ink Death very soon I put Lord of the Rings away for Ink Heart but now that im finished its back to Lord of the Rings ! PS All the characters are cool an I hope Dustfinger is alive somehow in Ink Death !!!!!

  15. cass

i loved inkdeath. it annoys me that almost nobody likes doria. farid was cool at first and i cried when he died but afterwards i noticed that he could never love meggie enough and he kissed too many other girls(bella). doria however is true and can love meggie. i am team doria ps please write a 4rth book

  16. cass

oh my gosh i loved the series and i loved inkdeath! it’s annoying me though that almost nobody likes farid. I liked him at first and i cried when he died but i just think that he loves dustfinger too much and he’s kissed other girls too much so i am team doria ps pretty please write a 4rth

  17. Kat

I lloooooooooovvvve INKDEATH! I just can’t stop reading it! I love all the characters like, Dustfinger, Mo, Strong Man, Battista, Resa, Roxane and the Black Prince. Oh! I totally love the Black Prince! He’s definitely my favorite character of all. Reading through the other comments, i really don’t care that Farid and Meggie broke up. Honestly, i don’t think Farid was Meggie’s type. I must admit that Doria is a better guy for Meggie and i’m glad she choose him. I still love Farid-but not as much as Doria, or especially the Black Prince. Please Funke, write a fourth book! I love your boooksss! Almost as much as i love the Harry Potter series! I HATE Twilight. Those series can go and get consumed by Dustfinger’s fire!

  18. reb101

will you please write a fourth book?I loved the way meggie and farid were in love.I know it can be hard to write a book but i cried when meggie and farid were no longer together. i dont mean to insult you miss Funke but to me you breaking up farid and meggie ruined the book. I think you are a great author but when you broke up farid and meggie it made me hate inkdeath. I think i will stick with twilight because in twilight you dont see hearts broken. Thanks anyway. You did a great job with dragon rider

  19. ariel

i loved these books please come sighn mine in iowa! you rock!!!!

  20. Amy

I just finished inkdeath its good. i was kinda disappointed with the love triangle though, it doesnt belong in thatkind of story.

  21. ro dude

the trilogy is the best series since the wereling or twilight. i read all of the ink heart books. But not to knock on the last book but i sure wished that meggie had a bigger part in the story. Or maybe have the creator of the book actually do something productive besides writing about a troll. All well mo’s part of the story really made up for it though. Overall a really good i am just a bad book critic.

  22. BeastlyBeastKid205

The Inkheart trilogy is by far far my favorite books of all I own.I find it a challenge to put one of them down.

  23. Sophia

So far what i read for Inkheart is really good! I love you Cornelia Funke!
Plese come book signing in Michigan!

  24. Xepher

I had read one and two of the series and will be reading the last one, Inkdeath, really soon. By the sound of this reveiw, it will be a breath-taking advantager. I’m pretty sure everyone will want to read this just as bad as I do…

  25. BeccaMonkey987

I LOVE the Ink trilogy!!!!!!! Cornelia Funke is so discriptive and has great ideas. This book really shows the power of words.
