Emma and Daniel Talk Deathly Hallows

HP71 Harry Potter News

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 comes to theaters on November 19, and I promised you interviews with Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry) and Emma Watson (who plays Hermione), so here they are! Keep in mind, that they have already finished filming Part 2, so some of their answers refer to both movies. Sadly, we have to wait until 2011 to see Part 2, and all we can do now is imagine them in the final scene when they are all older. . .

Q: My friends nicknamed the 7th book Harry Potter and the Prolonged Camping Trip because of the uneven pacing especially in the beginning. What do you think about splitting the book into two films?

Harry Potter 7 Movie!

Harry Potter 7 The 7th Harry Potter movie is coming to theaters on November 19, and I for one CAN'T WAIT! You probably know by now that they are not going to try to cram all of the Deathly Hallows book into one tiny movie, so this year we get Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1(not yet rated). The movie for Part 2 will come out in 2011.

I have on my computer as I type this right now interviews with Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, the actors who play Harry and Hermione, and they are really good interviews! But you have to wait for them. Sorry. The interviews are "embargoed" until the end of October. (That's a business term meaning "We don't want you to see them yet.") Click here on October 22 to read what they have to say about the end of the Harry Potter series.

In the meantime, you can see the new trailer for the movie, and a slideshow of images you can pour over and imagine what's going on.

Harry Potter Word Scramble

Hp7 Hi! I recently met a girl from France who was trying to read Harry Potter in English. If you've ever tried to read in another language before, you know it's really hard. But it is even harder to read Harry Potter because a lot of the words are not in the dictionary, so she couldn't even look up the words to see what they mean! The words might as well be just gobbledygook letters all scrambled up into nonsense. (You can see where I'm going with this.) Today's Trivia Quiz is a Harry Potter word scramble, so you can feel what it's like to read Harry Potter in an unfamiliar language. These words can be anything from the Harry Potter books: characters, creatures, plants, you name it. Some are easy; some are hard. Try to unscramble these words and write your answers in the Comments.

  1. Efhfluuffp
  2. Rrxocuh
  3. Bslua oubleedrdm
  4. xbenubsatoa
  5. Eelwlydgi

Harry Potter Interview with. . .

Hp_130 Happy post-holidays Ink Splotters! In the past few weeks I've brought you interviews with Tom Felton and Bonnie Wright (Draco and Ginny), and the Phelps twins (Fred and George). Now I'm back, and you know what that means – another another Harry Potter movie interview! (Insert gasps here.) Can you guess who? I'll give you a few clues.

  • Clue #1: She had a huge crush on Ron Weasley.
  • Clue #2: Her best friend is Parvati Patil.
  • Clue #3: Her name is a color.

If you guessed Lavender Brown, you're correct! Our own Marie Morreale traveled to London to the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I for cast interviews, and got the chance to speak with Jessie Cave who plays Lavender in the final three movies. (Lavender was played by different actresses in the earlier movies.)

Q: When you were reading the Harry Potter books, did you see yourself as the character?
Ron_and_lavender Jessie:
Not at all, quite the opposite. I mean I read Half-Blood Prince actually weirdly maybe six months before I got the call to an audition. And when I first read the book I didn't like Lavender at all, and found her really annoying. So then to read it again with me in mind playing her, it was very different. I suddenly realized that actually she's just got this huge crush on a boy. And she does just get heartbroken as well. So I had a lot of empathy for her, as opposed to really disliking her.
[Ratha: I agree!]

Q: She probably is one of the characters fans really don't like. What is their reaction to you?
Jessie:
I've gotten loads of really sweet letters really loving Lavender and thinking Ron and Lavender should be together and stuff like that. I don't know. I think she's a source of humor in the film. She's not a caricature but she's very nearly a caricature and I think the response to her is funny.

Q: Have you ever gone through a crush like that?
Jessie:
Well, I tried to. I wasn't quite as successful as Lavender, but I remember just getting these huge crushes on boys at school. I remember finding a timetable [class schedule] of one of the boys I fancied, and me and my friends would just follow him around. We knew wherever he was in the school day. I used to walk past his class window, thinking that it would make a difference. That he would see me. I was just pathetic. I shouldn't be repeating it now! I was fourteen or fifteen. Just pathetic!
[Ratha: Don’t worry, we've all been there!]

Q: Was it strange coming into an established series where these people had grown up together? Did you have that sort of "new girl in town" vibe?
Lavender Jessie:
Yeah, it was incredibly strange given that I've watched them onscreen and read the books since I was young. But it was a relief to meet them and to realize they are actually really normal. They were all lovely and welcoming. It was a brilliant experience.

Q: Who do you think you bonded with most?
Jessie:
On set? Definitely Emma [Watson who plays Hermione]. I really got on with Emma really well. I thought she was brilliant.

Q: How was it kissing "Ron Ron" (Won-Won) in Half-Blood Prince?”
Jessie:
It was weird! It was just so strange, mainly because it was my first day of shooting. You were really plunged into the deep end. There were so many people in the room as well so it was quite scary. But, also because of that, because of the people and the sets, it's quite easy to pretend you're in that world for a minute.

Q: How many times did you have to take the shot?
Jessie:
Quite a few times. Because there were different angles, it was a two day thing!
[Ratha: Hmm. . . I'll bet they went through lots of chapstick.]

Q: Was it easy or difficult for you to play the character?
Jessie:
She was really quite liberating to play. It would be nice to be that free with your emotions and your feelings, and profess your love to people. She's quite energetic and so she's quite fun to play.

Q: What is the best memory that you're going to take away?
Jessie:
I think the best memory will be my final day of shooting [Half-Blood Prince] and we were over there in the Weasley Wizard Sweet Shop, which I just love because I used to be an illustrator. I did art. And every single box of sweets was decorated and designed and was beautiful and I just remember thinking, "This is brilliant." But not only that, it was because I knew it was coming to an end the filming. It was such a beautiful day and I remember being so happy that I'd been in this film, and I just remember I loved everything about it.
[Ratha: That's awesome. I think it's those moments that we get flashes of every now and then, that put everything in perspective, and make us really appreciate our lives.]

Q: What book do you think Lavender would recommend to read?
Jessie:
Probably something like the Twilight series (for ages 12 and up), because she's such a romantic and they've got great love stories going on in them. So I think she would have read them, and wanted to fall in love with a vampire.

Q: If you could play another character in the Harry Potter series, who would it be?
Jessie:
I'd love to play Professor Trelawney or Professor Dolores Umbridge, because they're eccentric characters and I love the glasses Trelawney wears.

There you have it! Keep reading the Harry Potter books and look for more Harry Potter cast interviews, streamlined straight from Ink Splot 26 into your brain. . . as we approach that magical moment – the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I on November 19, 2010.

James and Oliver Phelps Harry Potter Interviews!

Twins_130SURPRISE: Harry Potter Post-Holiday Present!
Ever wish the gift giving of the holidays could last just a tad longer? I always look forward to getting together post-holidays with my girlfriends I wasn't able to see before the holidays. . . to swap belated gifts. (That's a shout-out to you Karin L!)

Well, if you're wishing for one extra gift for the holidays, sorry, I can't help you. But if you're wishing for TWO extra holiday gifts, you got it! Because our own Marie Morreale traveled to London to the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I for exclusive cast interviews, and this week we're bringing you not ONE, but TWO Weasley twins. So get comfy, snuggle up with your computer, and enjoy the chat with James and Oliver Phelps, aka Fred and George Weasley.

Twins_old Q: Can you tell us how you got the roles for Harry Potter?
James:
Our friend had seen the advert in the paper. We'd never done any acting or anything so Mum came into our room and said, “You fancy it? It's there if you want to.”
[Ratha: I love how those Brits talk!]
It's like near the end of school term and she says, “Unfortunately it's a Wednesday. So that would mean you're going to have to take a day off of school.” So we were like, “Oh, Gosh no!”
Oliver: Any fourteen year old would probably say the same thing. So we go to this audition and they're auditioning for every single part in the film. There's probably three thousand people there going for different parts. And I've never seen so many people with glasses with just frames, no lenses or anything. Kids walking around with lipstick lightning bolts on their head!
James: There were loads of guys there with huge portfolios from the acting schools and everything, and we turned up with nothing. We didn't even have shirts that matched because we never ever wore the same thing, apart from our school uniform.
[Ratha: In England, many schools require a uniform. Usually it's a polo shirt/sweater, and trousers/skirts/shorts. I also had to wear a uniform when I was in grade school, and let me tell you, it cut way down on clothing expenses at the mall!]
So we quickly legged it over to the nearest department store and just grabbed two shirts off the rail. Then we waited for two and a half hours and eventually met the main casting director. Then six or seven auditions and screen tests later we got the parts. And that was nine years ago.
[Ratha: Boy does time fly.]

Twins_then  Twins_now

Q: How many other sets of twins auditioning were there?
Oliver:
We saw about five [but] I'm sure there was more. And the two guys who came out as we were going in, Si and Chris, actually turned out to be our doubles on the first film and we still keep in contact to this day. It's quite nice. Being our first audition, we didn't know how it worked, so we didn't have anything to get nervous about. And we always went with this attitude, “Well if this doesn't work out I'm not going to see these people again. Why should I care?” I think that kind of carried over into the characters, how they are.

Q: In the films you guys speak in unison. Does that ever happen in real life?
James:
It kind of came across because of that. In the films that happened because Oliver said something and I just cut him up to carry on pretty much exactly what he was saying. And Alfonso [the director of Prisoner of Azkaban] said, “I like that. Let's put it in.” So he literally got the script, crossed a load out and mixed it all up and it came from there. So I guess we do. I don't know why. Probably been around each other too much.
[Ratha: Any twins reading this? Does this happen with you too? Let us know in the Comments!]

Q: Have you managed to take any of the props as souvenirs?
Oliver:
A few may have found their way into my bag. We were on tour for the Half-Blood Prince and I was going through one airport. I took my laptop out of my bag and I found a puking pastie. And the [security] dude who was working was like, “What's that?” And I was like, “. . . puking pastie?” And he says, “What does that do?” “It makes you sick.” “Why have you got that?” And I said, “You're not gonna believe me if I told you.”
[Ratha: What I wouldn't do for a pair of extendable ears. . .]

Q: In which situation is it most obvious that Oliver is thirteen minutes older?
Oliver:
I'm probably a bit more sensible than James!

Q: During the years you've both had different haircuts. Which ones did you like most?
Oliver:
It was kind of an accident, how they got longer and longer, between the third and fourth film. And when we finished filming I actually kept it even longer than that. Looking back at the photos now I think how did I think that looked good? But at the time, maybe I thought I looked cool.
[Ratha: I can relate. In 8th grade, I used to curl my bangs with a curling iron every morning, then spray them with a half can of Rave hairspray until they looked perfectly immobile and fabulous standing 2 inches above my head. NOT!]
Oliver: Our natural hair color is brown, and they had to dye it back [red] recently and it took four or five hours to get the color back to match the continuity of the film. So I think I'll be quite glad when I'm not having a load of dye put in every three weeks or so.
[Ratha: That's what Tom Felton [Draco Malfoy] said about dying HIS hair blond for the Harry Potter movies.]

Q: Can you tell us any secrets about some of the stars in the film?
Oliver:
[laughs] I think Rupert's [Rupert Grint who plays Ron Weasley] math skills are something to be desired, especially if you're playing him at a sport. We play a lot of golf and table tennis, and it's amazing when you finish playing a hole of golf. “It was six Rupe.” And he'll say, “No it was a four. It was a four!” And he'll start inventing new rules like, “Oh I'm allowed to throw off the tee on every nine holes," or something.
James: Alan Rickman [who plays Severus Snape] his deep voice and everything and the kind of character he plays, you're quite intimidated. But he's such an outgoing and funny guy!

Q: Which movie was your favorite to work on?
James:
I'd have to say Goblet of Fire. Oliver and I were always the oldest out of the junior cast, but at that time there were guys our age there. It just so happens Rob Pattinson was in it who has now gone on to do Twilight (rated PG-13).
[Ratha: From Cedric Diggory to Edward – not a bad move!]
Oliver: I didn't realize how big Rob was until we came to America and I'd say eighty percent of the magazines on there have his face on the cover.
James: It's quite surreal for us because Rob's a mate we know from here.
Oliver: We can remember going through the pub in London with him, and no one would say a word to us!
[Ratha: Wow – these talented British actors hang together – how cool! I know she's not British, but I wonder if Kristin Stewart and Emma Watson would ever hang out?]

Q: Would you like to keep acting?
Oliver:
I'd like to yeah. I'd like to definitely give it a go for a while any way. We kind of learned from a who's-who of British TV and film.
James: As Robbie Coltrane said to us on the first movie, “This is like having a Rolls Royce for your first car.” So you're never gonna get better than this.

Well I'm not sure about that. I think James and Oliver would be fab in their own movie someday. Or maybe they could have a Weasley Brothers spin-off. Could be a twisted comedy. Hmm. . .

Hope you enjoyed the interview! Let us know in the Comments. Check back next Friday for another exclusive Harry Potter movie interview. The next movie won't be released in theaters until November 2010, but in the meantime you can check out the Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince DVD, and of course, you can always reread your Harry Potter books! Bye for now!

Harry Potter Movie Cast Interviews!

Bonnie_tom Okay, I keep writing and rewriting my introduction to this blog post, because I'm finding it hard to put into the perfect words how I feel about Harry Potter. I want to get it exactly right! Then I thought of this: HARRY POTTER MOVIE CAST INTERVIEWS. Sound good? All right, let's roll with it!

Our own Marie Morreale traveled to London to the film set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I (the next Harry Potter movie as I'm sure you know!) where she nabbed EXCLUSIVE interviews with the cast. She must have the best job in the world right?

So. . . in celebration of the DVD release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Rated PG) — and let's just say as an early holiday present — we are bringing you an interview with Draco and Ginny. Err. . . Tom Felton and Bonnie Wright that is.

Q: Are you both happy about the way your parts got more important in the last book?
Bonnie: Yeah I definitely was happy where J.K. Rowling took the character of Ginny. I think if we were all told at the first film where our characters would end up, I don't think any of us would have imagined. It's just really enjoyable and sort of unnerving at the beginning when you do read the last book.
Tom: Seriously. When that came out I was like, I'm not going to read it. I'm going to wait for the script. I don't want to be reading bits in the book and thinking I can't wait to do that and then find out it's not going to be featured. And that lasted about an hour, and within it being released in a day I read the whole thing!

Q: Tom, originally you were auditioning for the role of Harry Potter.
DracoTom: Yes. I thought they would dye my hair a dark brown for Harry one week, then red for Ron for another week. The week after that, blond for Draco.
Q: So your blond hair's not really blond?
Tom:
Seriously? No, definitely fake. It's a painful routine where every week needs the roots touched up.
[Ratha: Ouch. Who knew being a blond could be so painful? And they say blonds have more fun.]
Q: What is your natural hair color?
Tom:
It's been a while so I couldn't tell you. But I've been told my eyebrows [are the same as my natural hair color]. So I'm looking forward to finding out whatever it is.
Bonnie: Brown.

Q: Tom, after this, would you like to switch it up from being the evil one to being the hero?
Tom:
Completely. I'd like to do anything that contrasts this as much as possible really. Anything that doesn't involve blond hair would also be a plus.

Q: What's the most amusing thing you've read [in the media] about yourselves?
Tom:
I was in Twilight last week. And I'm doing a Burberry campaign next week. So both of those things are untrue as far as I know.
[Ratha: Hmm, although I suppose Draco could make a good vampire…]

Q: Bonnie, what about you and James Phelps? Are you dating?
Bonnie:
[laughs] No we're just good friends. And I'm good friends with his girlfriend anyway.
[Ratha: James Phelps plays Fred Weasley. Could you imagine if Bonnie was dating her on-screen brother? Too funny!]

Q: Tom, have you ever experienced in real life that people think you are kind of evil like your character?
Tom_feltonTom: Yes. There have been a few people that have not seen the difference between reality and the film. I had a gentleman, luckily I never met the guy, but he legally changed his name to Lucius Malfoy and wanted to adopt me. He sent me the adoption forms and wanted to change my name to Draco and we could all live [together]! Thankfully my mother declined his offer and I'm still at home.

Q: In Harry Potter 6 everyone's in love except Draco.
Tom:
Oh what's that? Can you believe it! I didn't even realize all this stuff was going on because I was doing the whole evil walk down the corridor thing and when we saw the film everyone sort of. . .of course I'm jealous! I like to think Draco had offers but he was too busy with his evil task at hand.
Bonnie: Or they weren't good enough.
Tom: This was it. Very high standards for Draco. I can't imagine why any female on the planet would want to spend the day with him.

Q: Which of the other actors do you look up to?
Tom:
I look up massively to Dan [Harry], Rupert [Ron] and Emma [Hermione]. I think they hold the fort single-handedly so well. They're all superb actors and they carry the feature through beautifully. And they deal with it like it's nothing! I know we're all here quite a bit, but they're here religiously. Endless days, and yet Daniel takes it all in his stride and absolutely loves it. I always admire watching him on set.
[Ratha: Draco admires Harry! But not in the movie of course.]

Q: Bonnie, have you been nervous about kissing Harry Potter/Daniel?
Ginny_and_harry Bonnie:
I don't know I guess.
Tom: He was nervous I think.
Bonnie: I guess when you read it in the book and you know inevitably this was going to happen, it's kind of weird knowing down the line that's where the characters end up.
[Ratha: SPOILER ALERT! Don't read the following sentence, unless you have read Book 7: The Deathly Hallows!]
It was surreal that someone you've known in a completely different way for so long suddenly you're going to have to do this, and have three kids with.
[Ratha: OK SAFE TO READ AGAIN!]
Bonnie cont.: I think we know each other now though, so we don't feel embarrassed. And that dynamic just makes it so much easier and much more natural I think. It just sort of comes together in a way that we can't really explain.
[Ratha: Aaahhh. . . just like REAL magic.]

Q: Is there any particular scene from any of the books that you wish you could have filmed but wasn't filmed?
Tom:
They cut out actually very little. There was a thing in the second film where Jason [Lucius Malfoy] and I did a scene at Borgin and Burkes and it was the first time that it was father and son together. And that answered a lot to me why Draco is like that. Unfortunately it was never featured in the film. It was on the DVD as a deleted scene, so I got to watch it, which was cool. But no, everything else we've shot. Especially on these last two [films]. Everything — when I read the book I thought, “I can't wait to shoot that.” It's all there, so we're very excited.
[Ratha: Deleted scenes. Chalk up another reason why DVD releases are so cool.]

Q: How would you describe J.K. Rowling?
Bonnie Bonnie:
I always find it so surreal meeting her. This whole world literally is because of one person.
Tom: She's a very unassuming down-to-earth lady, the most lovely lady. I was always taken away by how genuine she seemed, and how unaffected by the fact that she's probably the world's biggest author.

Q: Do you both have all the Harry Potter movies at home? Do you watch them from time to time?
Bonnie:
Yeah, we're always given lots and lots of copies every time they come out.
Tom: Yeah, plenty of DVDs. It's cool. They play it on TV so much, I swear. It's just kind of weird looking back at yourself when you were [high voice] speaking like this [normal voice] and then you were that tall. Bonnie: We should have a little movie marathon.
Tom: Yeah, one day.
Bonnie: Maybe in like twenty years or something.
Tom: Yeah. I've never actually sat down and properly watched them from start to finish. It might be kind of cool one day.

Well. . . why don't we start with a peek at the Half-Blood Prince DVD! Take a look!

Is it all coming back to you? I don't know about you, but November 19, 2010 can't come fast enough for me! (That's the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I.) Let me know your thoughts on our exclusive interviews in the Comments. Personally, now I'm a big fan of Tom Felton. I never knew he was so cool! And look for MORE of our exclusive interviews to come, as the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I gets closer!
