Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotations: Allie Finkle

Alliefinklemovingday_130 I haven't posted a "Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotation" in a while, and since it's almost the new year, I thought I'd try my hand at an Allie Finkle edition — because her rules are kind of like New Year's resolutions. (In case you're not familiar with Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls, it's a series by Meg Cabot about a girl who keeps a notebook of all the important things to remember as she navigates school, friends, family, and boys.)

For this "Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotation" entry, I chose two of my favorite rules from Allie's notebook:

"Don't get a pet that poops in your hand."
and
"Don't put your cat in a suitcase."

Here are my twisted versions:

  • Don't get a pet that urinates in your bed.
  • Don't put your cat in a mailbox.
  • Don't get a pet that sheds on your prom dress.
  • Don't put your cat in a dollhouse.
  • Don't get a pet that eats in your bathroom sink.
  • Don't put your cat in a filing cabinet.

YOUR TURN!
"Don't get a pet that _____ in/on your _____."
and
"Don't put your cat in a _____."

How would YOU fill in the blanks?

Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotations: Chasing Vermeer Edition

It's been a while since I tried my hand at the Hugo Cabret edition of "Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotations." Time for another installment — this time based on the art mystery, Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett!

Here's my attempt (as you can see, I was inspired by the crime aspect of the original):

"At 12:01 on the morning of January 1, John Doe was hunting for his right shoe. Police Captain Martin was looking under the bushes for a footprint. Both reached their front doors at the same moment."

YOUR TURN!
"At _____ on the morning of _____, _____ was hunting for _____. _____ was looking under the _____ for _____. Both reached their _____ at the same moment."

— Karen, STACKS Staffer

Btw, here's the real thing:
"At 7:30 on the morning of November 5, Calder was hunting for his sneakers. Petra was looking under the living room sofa for the hairbrush. Both reached their kitchens at the same moment."
— from Chapter 11 of Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett

Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotations: Hugo Cabret Edition

Everyone's heard Shakespeare’s famous line from Hamlet: "To be or not to be, that is the question." But what if Hamlet had actually said, "To wear boxers or to wear briefs, that is the question"? Or, "To eat chicken feet or slurp ox tail stew, that is the dinner menu"? You can bet the play would have turned out very differently!

If you could change the direction of your favorite story just by replacing a few words here and there, what would YOU do? Take a crack at it with this "Fill-in-the-Blank Famous Quotation" from The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

Here's mine:

"The story I am about to share with you takes place in outer space, under the roofs of the space station Splotzon 5000. Here you will meet a robot named Martin, who once, long ago, discovered a tuna casserole that changed his life forever."

YOUR TURN!
"The story I am about to share with you takes place in _____, under the roofs of _____. Here you will meet a _____ named _____, who once, long ago, discovered a _____ that changed his life forever."

Btw, here's the real thing:
"The story I am about to share with you takes place in 1931, under the
roofs of Paris. Here you will meet a boy named Hugo Cabret, who once,
long ago, discovered a mysterious drawing that changed his life
forever."
— from the introduction to The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
