A Message from Guardians of Ga’Hoole Author, Kathryn Lasky
Dear STACKS Readers,
It’s my great pleasure to introduce you to my latest Guardians of Ga’Hoole book, The Rise of a Legend, the story of Ezylryb, the legendary whiskered screech of the Great Ga’Hoole tree. This prequel reveals how this owl from the ice-choked Northern Kingdoms rose through the ranks to become the commander of the Glauxspeed Division and why he gave it all up and flew to the Great Ga’Hoole Tree where he became the greatest scholar in its history as well as a mentor to the great owl Soren.
Why, for my first owl book in five years, did I choose to write about Ezylryb? It all began with a boy named Evan who sent me an email. “So what do you plan on doing after finishing the wolves series?” he asked. Would I ever go back to owls? “You told us about Ezylryb as a grown up, but why not go into detail about his childhood and years as a commander? You have endless possibilities.”
Why had I never thought of this! Evan was right. I felt a thrill in my gizzard. There were endless possibilities. The story of Ezylryb’s youth was so dramatic. Before he was known as Ezylryb, he was called Lyze of Kiel. Lyze never wanted to fight, but the death of his beloved sister drove him to pick up his battle claws. He became a great strategist. He knew weapons and he knew how to bring together animals as different as Kielian snakes and snow leopards and turn them into crack fighting teams and espionage units. In The Rise of a Legend, you will meet other characters from the Guardians of Ga’Hoole books, such as Octavia the blind snake and the Great Snowy owl Moss. You’ll see them when they were young, sometimes foolish, and often scared. You’ll see them grow, gather courage and begin to question why and if there must always be war.
I had so much fun revisiting Ga’Hoole and the hero owls there, and hope you enjoy reading The Rise of a Legend as much as I enjoyed writing it.

If you are a fan of Guardians of Ga'Hoole, have you read the Wolves of the Beyond series also by Kathryn Lasky? Book #5 Spirit Wolf has just come out, and we have a sneak peek to show you!
Wolves of the Beyond: Spirit Wolf by Kathryn Lasky
No one ever saw Faolan as a leader. Banished as a pup, he survived and returned as a gnaw wolf—the lowest member of the wolf pack. But Faolan wasn’t meant to be a gnaw wolf. It’s not just his strange, splayed paw, or his uncanny connection with the bears. There’s something about Faolan that inspires certain wolves…and leaves others deeply suspicious. Now, with a dangerous threat on the horizon, the pack must make a choice. Will they trust the silver outsider with the task of leading the battle? If Faolan can’t fulfill his destiny, it could be the end of the wolves of the Beyond.
Read the first chapter.

Welcome to Scholastic Booktalks where we recommend brand new Scholastic books that we think you will love. Today's booktalk is: Wolves of the Beyond #2: The Shadow Wolf, sequel to Lone Wolf by Kathryn Lasky.
After being on his own since his second milk mother died, Faolan has found his clan. The MacDuncan clan let Faolan join their ranks, but as a gnaw wolf. Faolan was born with a deformity, a splayed paw with a spiral pattern on it. When wolves are born with deformities, they are considered cursed, given the name “malcadh” and abandoned in the wild. If the malcadh survives, it is allowed to return to the clan but is given the lowest ranking.

Hey all you Guardians of Ga’hoole fans. You’re reading that headline right. The Guardians of Ga’hoole series by Kathryn Lasky is being made into a movie!
It’s going to be an animated film, made by the same people who did Happy Feet. The movie will encompass the story in the first three books. And just announced over the weekend: now we know who’ll be doing some of the voices!
Actor Ryan Kwanten will be the voice of Soren. Hugh Jackman (whom I love as Wolverine in the X-Men movies!) and Hugo Weaving will also be joining Ryan Kwanten to voice characters in the movie. But I can’t find who they’re voicing! Hugo Weaving’s played a lot of older, ruler-type characters like Elrond in the Lord of the Rings movies and Noah the Elder in Happy Feet. So maybe he’ll fill a similar role and voice Ezylryb in this movie. Then again, maybe not.
In this case, your guess is as good as mine. So I want to hear your guesses! Which characters do you think Hugh Jackman and Hugo Weaving will be voicing?
