AnnaSophia Robb in Soul Surfer

SoulSurfer_blog SOUL SURFER SPLASHES INTO THEATERS

Many of you have heard the true story of Bethany Hamilton. She was a teen surfer from Hawaii who had her arm bitten off in a shark attack in 2003. Against all odds, she returned to the water to surf again. And now you can see the movie chronicling her experience, Soul Surfer (rated PG) in theaters.

It stars AnnaSophia Robb (from Race to Witch Mountain, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Bridge to Terabithia) as Bethany Hamilton. AnnaSophia worked with Bethany and became friends with her doing the movie, and you can tell on screen. I recently saw the movie at a media screening, and thought it was amazing. But warning: it's a tear jerker. I had to hold back tears several times, and judging from the sound of sniffles in the theater, so did my fellow movie reviewers (and these were adults by the way!).

Basically, the movie starts with Bethany as a kid, surfing in Hawaii. Born to famous surfing parents, she won her first surfing competition at age 8. She surfed with her best friend Alana, and they got sponsored by major surfing companies. On Halloween morning 2003, while they were surfing, a 14-foot tiger shark bit off her left arm. I swear I jumped a foot in my seat during this scene! I wasn't expecting it at that point.

After undergoing many surgeries, and refusing a prosthetic arm, Bethany returned to surfing. Her whole struggle was gut wrenching. Her faith in God helped her a lot. In the movie, her youth group leader (played by Carrie Underwood) took her to Thailand to help the victims of a tsunami. This opened her eyes to others' suffering, and eventually led her to leadership roles helping others. Not to mention, she also went on to win a 2007 National Surfing Championship, and turned pro!

On my way out of the movie, I was chatting with a New York City newspaper reporter, who was also reviewing the movie. She said she thought the acting was a bit melodramatic and overdone. I was like, "But the girl just got her arm bitten off by a shark!" Honestly, I forgave the drama in the movie. I thought it was really an amazing story, and the movie did it justice. I had known about the story from the news, but the movie really put a cool spin on it. It was very uplifting.

What do you guys think? Have you seen Soul Surfer or read the book? Drop a line in the Comments!

New Disney Movie: Lemonade Mouth

Lemonade3 What do you think of when you think of school? Popularity? Cliques? Bullies? Looking forward to the end of the school day? Well, duh! But what if for just a moment you could hope for school to be more than a popularity contest, a clique-fest, and a place where bullying occurred? What if it were a place where the non-popular groups gained control, where diversity reigned, and where your voice could be heard by not only the other students, but also by the school faculty?

Get ready to find a school like this because in the book and the new Disney movie, Lemonade Mouth, school is about banding together, fighting for what you believe in, and more!

Rodrick Rules Movie Review!

DAWK2_blog One of the fantastic perks of working for Scholastic is that sometimes when a new movie comes out, I get to see an advance screening of that movie. The studios, like 20th Century Fox, have a preview of the movie for "media" in a screening room somewhere in New York or L.A. So I pile into a tiny theater with other members of the media - like other web, magazine, or TV writers - and we get to watch the movie before it hits theaters.

In February, I got to see an advance screening of (drumroll please) Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules (rated PG)! A full month before it would come out in theaters! And after being a fan of the books series, and looooving the first movie, I have to tell you I was psyched.

Wherefore Art Thou Gnomeo?

Photo_gnomeo Carly M.'s cute Create a Caption post with David the Gnome mentioned the new movie Gnomeo and Juliet. Well today, we've got a more complete story.

"O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?" You guys may have heard of this line. It's a line from the famous William Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet, and maybe even one of the most famous lines in literature! I think I was in 10th grade when I first read Romeo and Juliet. Once I got past the old English style of writing (lots of thou, thy, and doth), I was convinced it was one of the saddest love stories of all time.

Jack Black on Gulliver's Travels

Jack_Black Hitting theaters on Christmas Day is Jack Black's new movie, Gulliver's Travels (rated PG). You may remember Jack Black as the hilarious teacher in School of Rock. Well his new movie is a modern day version of a book written almost 300 years ago by Jonathan Swift! But of course with Jack Black involved, you can bet it will have a funny twist.

In the movie, Jack Black plays Gulliver, a mailroom clerk who lies about his job to get a big reporting assignment on the Bermuda Triangle. He goes there, only to be transported to an undiscovered land called Lilliput. All the people there are miniature, and Gulliver is literally a giant. There are lots of crazy CGI (computer generated imagery) scenes to say the least!

Check out the official movie trailer to get an idea.

Read on for a video and interview with Jack Black himself to give you the scoop on Gulliver's Travels.
