Have you ever seen Boy Meets World? I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that show. I have since I was really little! I am so excited now because Disney will bring back Cory and Topanga in a new show, Girl Meets World, premiering tonight on Disney Channel at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. The show will follow the funny and thought-provoking adventures of their daughter, Riley. We’ve got an interview with 12-year-old Rowan Blanchard, who plays Riley, and we got to ask her about her character, her favorite authors, and her most embarrassing moment! Check it out.
Tell me about your character on Girl Meets World.
Rowan: I play Riley Matthews who is the daughter of Cory and Topanga. She is 12 years old and in seventh grade. She’s extremely silly and quirky, but I think what makes Riley so special is that she’s so extremely loyal to everyone.
How are you and Riley similar?
Rowan: We’re both extremely quirky and academic. I think we’re both very loyal to our friends and we both will make sacrifices for friendship. As we got further into filming the season, I noticed that the writers would put things that I’ve done into the script. I think I’m morphing into Riley, and Riley is morphing into me!
When did you know that you wanted to act?
Rowan: I know everyone says this, but I really have been performing since I was, like, three. I used to put on my own little shows when I was little.
Before you did Girl Meets World, did you watch Boy Meets World?
Rowan: Yes. Reruns play all the time on TV, so I watched it before, but obviously after I got the role of Riley I went back and watched all of it again.
What do you love most about the show?
Rowan: I think what makes the show so great is that we are using the same amount of funny as we are heart. So we’re telling the real emotional stuff, you know, through heart and through comedy, which I think is extremely hard to do. I think that’s what makes it so special, and I think that’s why kids will really love it.
What’s your favorite book and why is it your favorite?
Rowan: I just finished The Outsiders (for ages 12 and up). I think The Outsiders has to be one of my favorite books of all time. It’s so incredible because a lot of books tend to shy away from what kids really are doing and how kids really feel. The author [S. E. Hinton] was a teenager while she was writing The Outsiders, and that’s what makes it so truthful and honest. And the movie (rated PG-13) is fantastic.
Do you have a favorite author?
Rowan: One of my favorite authors has to be Sarah Weeks. I love So B. It. [Guess who else loves the same book? Zendaya!] And I love Ray Bradbury.
What’s the funniest or the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you recently?
Rowan: Gosh, we were filming an episode a few weeks ago and I was in the middle of a take. It was a really good take and everyone was on their lines. Then there was this part where I had to walk over and sit with Sabrina, who plays Maya, and I sat down and I missed half the chair and I completely fell off the chair onto the ground! And I trip up stairs often. I do things like that all the time.
Rowan seems super-cool! I can’t wait to see what she (and Riley) do next. What do you think? Will you be watching Girl Meets World tonight? Share your thoughts in the Comments below!
