If you missed the beginning of the story, check out Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3. If you’d like to contribute to our next chapter, please post your writing on The Runaway Chapter 5 thread on the Fan Fiction Board. And now, without further ado, here’s Chapter 4!

The Runaway Chapter 4

The group crept slowly through the streets. Though it appeared that random strangers were unable to see the giant horse statue that walked along the sidewalk, the monster that had chased Emily only moments before could easily spot the iron giant.

Penny devised the brilliant plan of hiding Spinelli in deserted alleyways while Mark would run ahead and make sure the coast was clear. Although it took them the rest of the afternoon, the gang finally arrived at their destination by nightfall, Rosewater Park.

The public park stretched for nearly 100 city blocks and people would often get lost in its confusing pathways.

“There?” Mark questioned. “You want us to go in there? At night?”

For someone so big and strong, Mark could sure scare easily, Emily thought. But after a day of evading bullies and fire-breathing monsters, Emily was clean out of fear and she did not have the energy to argue with Spinelli. After all, the horse had saved her life once already. Why would it be leading her into any more danger?

“You’re sure about this Em?” Penny asked.

“Yeah, I’m sure,” Emily replied.

“Ok! Let’s do it!”

Penny was always up for an adventure, and boy, was this the perfect time to have her along for the ride.

Spinelli kneeled and turned to the gang.

“Follow me, my dears, and stay close,” the horse said in barely more than a whisper.

“Where are we going?” Emily inquired.

“To meet the Others, my dear,” Spinelli replied.

“Others?”

“What? You thought I’m the only walking, talking statue in this gigantic city?”

Emily looked and Penny who nodded her agreement and the pair followed Spinelli into the park.

“Wait! You can’t go without me!” shouted Mark and he followed after them.

The gang walked along a deserted, cobblestone path. They passed by empty park benches and an abandoned carousel Emily used to ride as a little girl. She spotted her favorite horse, the brilliant black steed with a pink ribbon that flowed from its mouth. In the daytime, it always appeared to be a friendly animal, but now, with the sun set below the horizon, it looked like a menacing beast.

“Listen, I don’t know what’s going on here, except for the fact that my little sister almost got killed,” Mark started. “How do we know there even are others? How do we even know you’re telling the truth? How do we –”

That’s when Mark bumped into Penny and Emily who had stopped walking. The path had come to a dead end. A dense patch of trees rose into the sky and blocked out most of the moonlight that had lit the path on which they walked. Though she squinted her eyes, Emily could not see past the first few bushes and twigs that lay before her.

“Why are we stopping?” whispered Mark.

“Because we’re here,” said Spinelli.

And, like a starry night sky, a wall of yellow eyes opened in the darkness and stared back at the gang of weary travelers.
