Last week, I posted a Shark Trivia Quiz in honor of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. The summer of 2012 was the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week, although sharks have been around for over 400 million years! Did you sink or swim with your answers? Check out the real shark facts below.

  1. What famous 1975 movie is the ultimate scary shark movie? Hint: It features a man-eating great white shark!
    ANSWER: Jaws (rated PG)
  2. What part of a shark’s body is a popular beach souvenir?
ANSWER: Teeth. Shark teeth are popular and cheap souvenirs. Sharks shed their teeth constantly. Once they fall to the ocean floor, they are covered with sand, and soak up sediments which change the tooth color from white to gray or brown. Many are made into necklaces.
  3. True or false? Like humans, sharks eat 3 meals a day.
ANSWER: False! They eat whenever they find food, no matter when that is.
  4. Which is NOT a type of shark?
ANSWER: The Chipmunk Shark is not a real type of shark. Although it does sound cute, doesn’t it?
  5. What are baby sharks called?
ANSWER: Pups. Sharks can have from 1–100 babies at a time depending on how they are born. There are 3 ways that sharks are born: 1) eggs are laid and hatch in the ocean, 2) eggs hatch inside the mother and then are born, 3) pups grow inside the mother (like humans).
  6. Like vampires, sharks like this human substance. They can usually smell it from far away
    ANSWER: Blood
  7. If you see a shark swimming near you, you should:
ANSWER: Quickly and calmly leave the water. Don’t splash. Sharks are attracted to the activity. Don’t provoke it! Although, if you are already under attack by the shark, “playing dead” doesn’t work. Use an object (or your hands as a last resort) to deliver blows to its delicate eyes, gills, or snout.
  8. Name the movie based on the true story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, who survived a shark attack in Hawaii.
    ANSWER: Soul Surfer (rated PG-13)
  9. A shark’s skeleton is not made of bone. Name the material it is made of. Hint: it is a rubbery material like on the tips of our nose and ears.
    ANSWER: Cartilage

There’s so much cool info out there on sharks. Personally, I am perfectly fine learning from the safety of my living room couch – not in the ocean! Are you a big fan of Shark Week? Drop a line in the Comments below!
