Rodrick Rules Movie Review!

DAWK2_blog One of the fantastic perks of working for Scholastic is that sometimes when a new movie comes out, I get to see an advance screening of that movie. The studios, like 20th Century Fox, have a preview of the movie for "media" in a screening room somewhere in New York or L.A. So I pile into a tiny theater with other members of the media - like other web, magazine, or TV writers - and we get to watch the movie before it hits theaters.

In February, I got to see an advance screening of (drumroll please) Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules (rated PG)! A full month before it would come out in theaters! And after being a fan of the books series, and looooving the first movie, I have to tell you I was psyched.

Storm Runners

Stormrunners Welcome to Scholastic Booktalks where we recommend brand new Scholastic books that we think you will love. Today's booktalk is: Storm Runners by Roland Smith.

Chase Masters is not your average 6th grader. He travels across the country with his father searching for storms. His father's business is called M.D. Emergency Services. The M.D. stands for "Masters of Disaster." Floods, tornadoes and hurricanes are all part of Chase's everyday life. During Chase's travels, he goes to the local school, but it's usually for only a few days or a few months. Once the storm ends, Chase and his father leave and travel to a different storm.

Their latest adventure brings them to Florida. A massive hurricane is about to make landfall and Chase's dad doesn't want to miss it. What's also interesting about the hurricane is the name; it's called Hurricane Emily. Emily was the name of Chase's mom. Two years ago, she and Chase's sister died in a car accident and Chase's father still has a hard time talking about it.

While in Florida, they agree to help out a farm in need of some repair. But this is no ordinary farm; it's where the circus stays during the wintertime! The farm is full of animals such as leopards, elephants, monkeys and lions. Even though Chase's dad says the hurricane will land in another part of Florida, Chase has his doubts. What would happen to the farm if the hurricane hit there?

The closer Hurricane Emily gets to Florida, the more Chase relies on TGB, or "The Gut Barometer." He knows that they're in for the craziest hurricane to ever hit the United States. All he can do is be prepared and hope for the best.

Freaky Friday Character Switcheroo

Switching_places_130Freaky Friday Writing Prompt

You know how in Freaky Friday, the mother and daughter switch places and have to spend a whole day living in the other person's body? Well, imagine if that happened to your favorite book characters. Which mother/daughter or father/son character combo would you switch?

I would want Hermione and her mother to switch places for a day. Imagine if Hermione's muggle mother were in Hogwarts! She would be so confused, but she would still look like Hermione so everyone would wonder why she couldn't do all the spells! And Hermione would probably be a really good dentist, but she wouldn't be able to use magic so she would be so frustrated! Imagine the hilarity.

Now it's your turn. Leave a Comment telling us about your character switcheroo.
