Warp_speedWelcome to Scholastic Booktalks where we recommend brand new Scholastic books that we think you will love. Today's booktalk is: Warp Speed by Lisa Yee, author of Millicent Min, Girl Genius, Stanford Wong Flunks Big Time, and So Totally Emily Ebers.

Meet Marley Sandelski. His outlook going into the eighth grade is not optimistic. How could it be, when the only classmates that pay attention to Marley are the bullies he calls the Gorn, as in humanoid reptiles from Star Trek? Marley's only companions are fellow sci-fi geek, Ramen, and the other members of the Audio Visual club, an unofficial self-proclaimed geek clique whose newest member, Max, brings something new to the table: high-tech wizardry and an obsession with Batman.

But it's not all bad. Marley can lose himself in the movies that play at The Rialto, his parents' theater. Then there's the new girl at school, Emily Ebers, both beautiful and surprisingly friendly. Could it be that this sweet, smart newcomer has actually taken a liking to Mr. Invisible himself, Marley Sandelski?

Just as Marley's settling in for another year wishing he was as cool-headed and smooth as his hero Captain Kirk, strange things start to happen. His once-fellow geek, Stanford Wong, who has now become a popular school basketball hero, suddenly wants to associate with him again. What's going on? Then, a series of unexpected confrontations make Marley realize that in junior high, he's not the only one feeling invisible. . . and people are not always as cool on the inside as they appear.

Will Marley's unexpected talent at running (from bullies) propel him into athletic stardom overnight? Does Emily actually like him, or is she just being friendly? Will a geek who feels invisible be able to stand up to those who sling insults and violence his way? Expect the unexpected as Marley's "captain's log" records the journey of one eighth grader who wants to boldly go where he's never gone before.

Wow! Sounds good! In the book Stanford Wong Flunks Big Time, Stanford talks about a boy who he used to be friends with, and the main character of this book, Marley, is the boy! I wish I could read it!
