Kids Can Change the World!
The BE BIG In Your Community Contest Opens TODAY!
It's that time of year again! The third annual BE BIG In Your Community Contest officially opens TODAY! And here at Scholastic, well, we're getting really excited to hear about the BIG Ideas that get submitted for a chance to win a $25,000 community grant to bring that BIG idea to life!
Last year over 25,000 parents, teachers, community leaders and KIDS just like YOU were inspired to BE BIG and entered their BIG Idea for a chance to win. Our grand prize winning team, Jennifer, Sharon and Lauren saw how hard it was for kids to stay caught up on their school work while in the hospital, so they decided to do something BIG about it: create a hospital classroom to help kids stay on top of their school work while hospitalized. There's nothing bigger than kids helping kids!
The runner-up winners included young people like Simone, whose BIG Idea was to create a "National VolunTEEN Website" to help kids between 10-17 find local volunteer and service opportunities. What a great idea! Or Will, whose BIG Idea "Hits for Hunger" uses baseball to raise awareness about hunger in the community. Such a BIG Idea! (Click here to check out all of last year's winners.)
Now that we've told you how kids all over are being BIG, tell us what you and your friends are doing to BE BIG in the 2011 BE BIG In Your Community Contest. Enter your BIG idea for a chance to win one of 30 grants totaling $75,000! And don't wait, the contest closes on June 17. Good Luck!

On snowdays, a lot of school work and lessons are lost, then kids have to make up for them at the end of the year. To stop this, our school could support the students with computers who don't, and we could Skype our lessons on the computer, or some other chat system.

Man oh man do I have ideas. It's just the things is is that I wouldn't know how to start the project. I plan on doing so many things when I'm older. The only things I could think of doing now would be either a clean-up to help streams, rivers, and bodies of water, or something else. I just wouldn't know where to start...

I love this! Even though I'm not participating, I love the fact that people are encouraging kids to make a difference in the world. Kids have just as much power as grown-ups if they put their minds to it!!! When I'm a bit older, I might start an organization just for kids that helps them do what they want to change the world for good. I hope kids aren't participating just for the money...that would be wrong. KIDS RULE!!!
