The 2011 Newbery Winner . . .
The Newbery Medal is awarded every year by a committee of librarians to recognize "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." Last year's winner was When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.
This year's winner was just announced today, and the 2011 Newbery Medal goes to Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool.
The Honor books are:
- Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Rick Allen
- Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus
- One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
- Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm
Have you read any of these yet? Do YOU think they were the best American books published in 2010? If you were on the committee voting for the Newbery Medal, which book would YOU have chosen? (Remember, only books published in 2010 by Americans are eligible.) Let us know in the Comments.
Also check out this other 2011 award winner that appeared in Ink Splot 26 over the last year.
- After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick (2011 Schneider Award)
This Isn't What It Looks Like by Pseudonymous Bosch.
Awesomest. Secret. Series. Book. Yet.

The only book I read on the list of honors is "Turtle In Paradise". It was a very good book. I would probably noimnate Violet In Bloom.

I LOVE Moon Over Manifest! It's not the best book ever though. The best book ever is Bloomablity. Anyway, Turtle in Paradise is really good too, but I would have chosen Coming Apart by Ann M. Martin for the Newberry Medal. GO GIANTS!!!!!

One of my choices for a Newbery book is "Smile" by Raina Telemigier, a good book.

I wish that for awards they would choose books that people acctually know, because in almost every year of these awards since I was in first grade, I never had heard of any of the books.
