_Jeremy Gilley_: Hello!
nashley86: Hello, Jeremy!
nashley86: This is a 6th grade class in New York that has been learning about Peace One Day. We just came back inside from making a human peace sign with several classrooms in our school.
_Jeremy Gilley_: Hi nashley86!
_Jr0628_: hey friend
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Welcome to the chat everyone.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Happy Peace Day!!
nashley86: What are you doing to celebrate Peace One Day?
_Jr0628_: okay
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: I’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Gilley.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: He is the founder of the Peace One Day and he is here to tell you all about it.
_Jeremy Gilley_: Welcome to the Peace Day chat everyone! Today we launched with Jude Law a global film initiative with the Film Nation’s Competition called Truce.
_Jeremy Gilley_: Also going on today have been live chats with schools in Russia discussing Peace Day and what they’ll be doing today.
_Jeremy Gilley_: Worldwide, we have 84 different life-saving activities involving 28 organizations in 31 different countries!
nashley86: What made you want to start an international day of peace?
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @nashley86 Good question. It is such a great idea, isn’t it?
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: While Jeremy is typing in his answer, I have a question for you guys.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: What does peace mean to you?
nashley86: We have enjoyed using the Peace One Day.org resources and seeing what Jeremy has to tell us about peace.
nashley86: Our class thinks peace means no fighting, nonviolence, saving people with vaccinations, no wars, and doing our part as individuals.
_Jeremy Gilley_: I wanted to make a film about peace because I was frightened about what is going on in the world. I realized there was no fixed day of peace–we needed a day to stop fighting from the playground to the battlefield. I knew that would be a great film, and that’s how it started. From there it has grown to something much larger.
_Fezinha_: Hello How are you? Do you have any project in Brazil?
_Jeremy Gilley_: Fezinha: There is activity going on in Brazil–and every other country in the world! There’s a One Day, One Goal program that is happening with a soccer match. If you know anyone in Brazil, spread the word about Peace Day to them. Everyone can help make it grow!
_Fezinha_: Thank you for your answer I will find out where this activities takes place in order to join me in! I really want to make a difference in the world! Have you ever been to Brazil? Do you have plans to come here?
_rickriordanfan_: Hey!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @rickriordanfan Hi. Welcome to the chat!
_monabellarocker_: Hey everyone!
nashley86: Do you travel to schools to share your message about peace?
_Jeremy Gilley_: Yes I do…as much as I can. I’m also Skyping with schools around the world, including Poland and Russia just this morning. I’ve been to schools in 60 countries, including many schools in America. Seeing kids making Peace Day work is fantastic.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @monabellarocker Hi!
_rickriordanfan_: Thanks! I’m super excited!
_TechnologyGirl_: hey]
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: What have you all been doing in school today to promote peace?
_rickriordanfan_: I homeschool, but I’ve been super nice to my sisters and really respectful to my mom.
_TechnologyGirl_: helping the teacher w/ our scarecrow
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @tech scarecrow? Is that a new peace symbol?
_rickriordanfan_: Jeremy Gilley? What is your favorite thing you like to see kids doing to make peace?
_Jeremy Gilley_: rickriordanfan: My favorite thing I like to see kids doing is say “Sorry”!
_TechnologyGirl_: thats not an easy word, Jeremy
_rickriordanfan_: Jeremy Gilley: I see that a lot in my homeschool group. We really put in a huge effort to get along
nashley86: We made posters, filmed newscasts and skits, danced to K’Naan’s song Waving Flag, pledged to use peaceful words and actions, invited all classes to join us and work together to make a huge human peace sign.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Please remember do not reveal your city, school name or last name. This is to keep you safe online!
_TechnologyGirl_: AWESOME!
_monabellarocker_: jeremy, do you have any advice for us in ways to make peace and help change something?
_TechnologyGirl_: what bella just said
_Jeremy Gilley_: monabellarocker: The best advice would be to have your teacher download the Peace One Day education resource; watch the Day After Peace film; and organize an event in your school/community to promote peace and sustainability. It’s all about action!
nashley86: My students were so proud of their work. It is amazing what young people can accomplish when they work together.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: A question for the kids out there: What do you think is the biggest problem in the world?
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: I think bullys.
_monabellarocker_: I think that the biggest problem is we don’t have enough peace
_Jeremy Gilley_: nashley86: You should certainly all feel proud. You guys are inspiring to me and to the whole Peace One Day team. If we could have more young people do those things we can change the world!
_monabellarocker_: @rickriordanfan I think that that is an issue too.
_Jaguars2010_: Jeremy Gilley what do you believe peace is supposed to be about? What can we do to make peace world wide?
_Jeremy Gilley_: Jaguars2010: Peace is about not suffering. Not being scared or frightened. Peace is about not being bullied.
_rickriordanfan_: monabellarocker: I hate it when people are bullied. It makes me really sad. I try to help everybody though
_monabellarocker_: @rickriordanfan Exactly
_Jeremy Gilley_: rickriordanfan: Bullies are tough, but the best thing to do is walk away. Talk to your teacher, talk to your mom & dad.
_rickriordanfan_: I think that if we’d stop the bullying, the world would be a much better place for everybody.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: down with bullies!!
_rickriordanfan_: Jeremy Gilley: Yeah, that’s what I usually do. I just try my best to ignore them, and then tell my parents or a teacher when I’m inside.
_rickriordanfan_: YEAH! down with bullies!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: We should just smile and say hello to everyone so no one feels scared or left out.
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: that’s what I usually try to do. I try to include everyone in a game or conversation, because I know what it feels like to be left out. You have this empty sad feeling. I don’t like feeling that way, so I try my best to make it so other kids don’t have to expirience it.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @rick You’re so nice!
_Jaguars2010_: Jeremy Gilley, what is your perspective of peace?
_Jeremy Gilley_: The reason why today is a day of nonviolence and cease fire is because the violence that goes on in our homes, schools, and communities is as important, if not more so, than the violence of a war. That’s why Peace Day means something to everybody. Peace Day is about not bullying, not fighting–no matter how old you are or where you are.
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: thank you!
_rickriordanfan_: Jeremy Gilley: I agree.
_Jeremy Gilley_: My perspective of peace is that it is absolutely possible! We have to believe and if we do believe we can change the world, we will.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Who are your peace role models?
_LittleTaco_: Happy Peace Day everyone!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @littletaco welcome to the chat! happy Peace Day!
_monabellarocker_: I don’t know who my peace role models are. I do have a few though. Jeremy Gilley is one of them!
_TechnologyGirl_: same to you little taco
_rickriordanfan_: Hmm… well Jeremy seems like this is something he truely believes in and is working really hard for, so I’d have to say him. But I know that Demi Lovato has set up a campaign against bullying. So I admire her too.
_TechnologyGirl_: awesome, she did?
_Sonja_St
acks_Staffer_: Jeremy is awesome! yay Jeremy Gilley!
nashley86: The Peace One Day education resource gave us weeks worth of lessons to focus on some stimulating conversations. Will there be new resources added each year?
_Jeremy Gilley_: nashley86: Yes, we are committed to working with education in the US. We are proud of our relationship with Scholastic and look forward to creating even more tools in the future that can help kids learn in the classroom.
nashley86: My kids have left for the day, but thank you so much for what you do to create a better world. We look forward to the challenge of spreading the peace!
_rickriordanfan_: Have you guys heard of any movies that encourage and promote peace??? I’ve been looking for movies to watch, but I think it’d be cool to see a movie that teaches us about peace. Any ideas?
_Jeremy Gilley_: Thanks nashley86!
_monabellarocker_: I think that the peace one day board is awesome! It has made us talk a lot and think really hard about peace.
_rickriordanfan_: monabellarocker: Yeah! That board is really fun.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @rickriordan I think Invictus is a great movie about peace
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: It’s about Nelson Mandela and racism in South Africa
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: Ok, I’ll look into it!
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: I’ve heard of some movies like that! They were really good too. I’ll definitly have to check this one out, Thanks!
_Jeremy Gilley_: We’ve created three films: Peace One Day, The Day After Peace, and Peace One Day Part 3 that is just finishing up. You can watch clips of the films on peaceoneday.org–and if your teacher is registered for the free resource materials, you can watch the Day After Peace online too!
_Britt-016_: hello
_TechnologyGirl_: hey
_rickriordanfan_: Britt-016: Hi! Welcome to the chat!
_Britt-016_: dis is so cool i jus found this like right this minute
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @Britt Hi!
_TechnologyGirl_: Jeremy: If you could be any person between Albert Einstien or John Smith, who would ya be?
_Jeremy Gilley_: TechnologyGirl: I would be Secretary General of the United Nations! What a cool job, a great oppurtunity to generate intercultural cooperation. Get communication going worldwide. Bring people together and talk with one another.
_TechnologyGirl_: cool\
_rickriordanfan_: Is Scholastic going to keep the peace board?? I really like it. I think it should be a permanent board. I think It’s really important that we try and keep peace all year.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: The Peace One Day Message Board is great isn’t it?
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: YES!! I love it! Is scholastic going to keep it??? I hope so.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Has everyone gone on there? http://community.scholastic.com/scholastic/board?board.id=peace_one_day_2010
_TechnologyGirl_: it is, Sonja, but it’s temporary
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: The Message Board will stay until November 15
_rickriordanfan_: Awww!!
_CVLCCMS_: This is wonderfull, i get to talk to Jeremy Gilley, and he replies back!!!
_Fezinha_: I would love to visit United Nations! We would like to have you there!
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: Yes I’ve gone on there.
_CVLCCMS_: hey jeremy Gilley, when you first heard had the thought of peace one day, on september 21 what did you think peace meant, what was the reason for this peace one day
_Jeremy Gilley_: My reason for wanting to establish Peace Day was because there wasn’t a day like that already. I wondered why there wasn’t a day when we all unite and have a day of global unity and coming together. It seemed like a logical step to unite the world, that’s what this day is all about. Young people are the key to Peace Day’s success.
_CVLCCMS_: Thank you jeremy gilley, you really open my eyes
_rickriordanfan_: There’s this kid asas47, who introduced me to the board. He’s really smart and a real peacemaker!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Yay for peacemakers!
_Britt-016_: hey
_rickriordanfan_: Yeah! Yay for peacemakers!! ;)
_CVLCCMS_: horray!! viva peace one day!!!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Viva peace!
_CVLCCMS_: hey Jeremy Gilley what do you do every peace day?
_Jeremy Gilley_: CVLCCMS: I raise awareness. My goal is to talk to as many people as I can and tell them that the day exists. I go on TV and talk with teachers and kids throughout the world. The whole Peace One Day team works hard to make the day what it is. There are more than 30 people who are instrumental in Peace One Day, but beyond that our partnerships with other groups and companies help make the day successful.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: You should all go on the Message Board. there are so many beautiful people on there leaving beautiful messages of peace.
_monabellarocker_: Yup, the peace one day board has been amazing
_Britt-016_: heloo
_rickriordanfan_: Have you guys heard the song Pyramid by CHARICE? It’s really good. She was abused when she was a child, and this song is about staying strong. She’s really inspirational. And she’s against bullies too. YAY Charice!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: I Love Charice!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: I never knew she was abused.
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: Yup! She’s really awesome
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: That’s so sad, but so inspiring
_rickriordanfan_: Sonja: Yeah, he dad wasn’t very nice to her as a kid. Her mom helped her though.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Jeremy, who is your role model?
_Jeremy Gilley_: Many people have inspired me and have been role models. Ahmad Fawzi, who worked at the United Nations, has been a real mentor and role model. Also, my grandad, mom, dad, and brother have always been inspirational. Of course I’m inspired by Gandhi and his actions. And also Jude Law who has been a real inspiration over the years and helped me really believe.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: The chat is almost over. Ask your questions now!
_Fezinha_: I wish you all the best! And hope that Peace Day can be every day!! Kisses
_Toni_Stacks_Staffer_: Jeremy, is there a significance to the date Sept 21?
_Jeremy Gilley_: Yes, 21 was my grandad’s favorite number. He was an amazing man. It’s also the one time of year when all the world leaders at the United Nations come together. Sept. 21, 2002 was the first Peace Day.
_Moderator_Elise_: Jeremy, I just want to say thank for creating the opportunity for kids to have discussions about peace. I love Peace Day, and I feel so lucky to have participated on the message board. Thank you!

_monabellarocker_: Bye everyone! This chat was inspirational and I really enjoyed it.
_rickriordanfan_: Yeah, I really enjoyed chatting with you!!
_Jeremy Gilley_: rickriordanfan: Seeing everybody communicating and talking, that’s the key to peace. Everybody talking is wonderful! That’s what it’s all about.
_PODEducation_: Thanks Elise!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: To _rickriordanfan_: Thanks Elise. You are an awesome moderator!
_Jeremy Gilley_: Elise: Thank you too. Thanks for making it all happen (from the whole Peace One Day team)!

_Moderator_Elise_: @Sonja: I totally agree! I printed out some of the poems and have them hanging on my fridge! :-)
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Elise, you’re the best!
_rickriordanfan_: Elise: You did?! COOL!
_monabellarocker_: @rickriordanfan i love Elise! And I love the peace forever newspaper! ;)
_rickriordanfan_: monabellarocker: There’s a newspaper? I’ve gotta catch up with things. That sounds AWESOME!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: @Elise What a great idea! I’m going to print some and post them in the Scholastic office
_Jeremy Gilley_: There’s lots of things that all of you can do for Peace Day. You can watch the Peace Day concert on peaceoneday.org with your friends and parents. Tell your friends a
nd family about the day and spread the word.
_rickriordanfan_: Jeremy Gilley: I’ll definitly spread the word. I’ll tell all my family members.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Thanks to Jeremy Gilley for joining us and inspiring us to spread peace.
_rickriordanfan_: Yes, thanks Jeremy!
_Jeremy Gilley_: There’s plenty of time left to participate in Peace Day. Visit the website to see what’s going on. Tell other students and your teachers about the day and the resources that are available. Most importantly, spread the word!
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: And thanks to you amazing people for joining the chat and spreading peace all over the world. i feel so happy knowing that you are the future of our world!
_rickriordanfan_: You’re welcome! Thanks for giving us some really good questions. It really had me thinking!
_rickriordanfan_: I think after this chat, I’m going to go post on the Peace One Day message board.
_Sonja_Stacks_Staffer_: Go to the Message Board to continue talking about peace. http://community.scholastic.com/scholastic/board?board.id=peace_one_day_2010
_Fezinha_: I will try to watch the concert now! Tks everybody for this opportunity!
