New Book by Walter Dean Myers
Welcome to Scholastic Booktalks where we recommend brand new Scholastic books that we think you will love. Today's booktalk is: The Cruisers by Walter Dean Myers.
Kambui, Bobbi, LaShonda and Zander are 8th graders at DaVinci Academy. Bobbi is a math whiz. Kambui is destined to be a great photographer. And Zander, who's the leader of the bunch, plans on being a writer. They are known as the Cruisers.
DaVinci Academy is one of the best schools in Harlem, but there's a chance that none of the Cruisers will be able to continue there. All four of them are really smart, but they just have a problem applying themselves in every subject. So the assistant principal, Mr. Culpepper, issues an ultimatum. The 8th grade is studying the Civil War. The class is being separated into two sides – the Union sympathizers and the Confederate sympathizers. The Cruisers’ assignment is to broker a peace treaty between the two sides before an actual war begins. If they aren't successful in achieving peace, then they may have to leave the school.
Zander and his crew have some ideas about how to negotiate peace. But once one of the Confederate sympathizers writes an editorial for the school newspaper about slavery, the Cruisers realize that this assignment is going to be harder than they thought.
Will the Cruisers be able to negotiate peace between the Confederates and the Union? Or will they be broken up and kicked out of school? Find out in the first book of the latest series by Walter Dean Myers!
