Greyson Chance Interview and Video!

GreysonChance He was just a normal 6th grade kid from Oklahoma who liked soccer and Harry Potter and his family tradition of lasagna on Christmas Eve. But (drumroll please!) after one fateful school talent show performance, his world changed forever! I’m talking, of course, about Greyson Chance.

Many of you already know of him, but if not, here’s the lowdown . . .

  • Greyson sang and played piano to Lady Gaga’s song “Paparazzi” at a talent show.
  • It was posted on YouTube and received over 30 million hits!
  • He went on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and got a record deal. (He’ll be Ellen’s first artist on her new label eleveneleven.) And he’s now on his way to being a star at age thirteen!
  • Personal Motto: No matter what ever happens,  always be yourself.
  • Favorite joke: Why did the little girl blush when she opened the refrigerator? She saw Salad dressing!

OK, that last part was random (but true – that really is his favorite joke!). Our own Marie Morreale got to interview him, and you can see in this exclusive video that Greyson is actually really funny and also just the sweetest person:

Q: Have you woken up from the dream? All of this happened so quickly.
Greyson:
I want to do as much as I can, and contribute to it as much as I can. Do as many interviews as I need, and stuff like that. So yeah I’m really excited. It’s just great.

Q: When you were younger did you know that you wanted to be in the music profession?
Greyson:
I knew I always wanted to sing, but when I was younger I didn’t know I could make a career out of it. But when I saw Lady Gaga at the VMA’s I was like, “That’s what I want to do right there.” So yeah. It’s always pretty much been my dream.

Q: When did you start playing the piano?
Greyson:
Three or four years ago. And it’s kind of a funny story. I’d take tape and put it on the keys, and I’d write C,D,E,F,G and so on the books that I had. So then I learned how to read music, and then I started reading, and then I started taking lessons.

Q: Where did you get the inspiration [for your original songs] “Broken Hearts” and “Stars?”
Greyson:
Well, “Broken Hearts” is actually about two girls, and I lived through that.
Ratha: Oops – I bet they’re sorry now!
Greyson: And “Stars” is actually about two people in love, and the wife passes away and then the husband goes after her. It’s about the heavens. It’s kind of like – the sequel to The Notebook. Which is really weird. I don’t know, but it’s the sequel to me!
Ratha: Nice! Nicholas Sparks should get in touch with you!

Q: What’s the best part of living in Oklahoma?
Greyson:
I think the people. Everybody’s just really nice and really sincere. Oh and the traffic. It’s not bad at all. No traffic.

Q: What’s the weirdest question you’ve ever been asked in an interview?
Greyson:
I was at the Twilight premiere and one of the reporters asked me, “How does it feel to be a part of the Twilight cast?” I’m like, “I’m not part of the cast.” So she looks down at this piece of paper and then she’s like, “Whoa, who are you?” I was like, “My name’s Greyson.” It was a train wreck, but it was so funny.
Ratha: Hilarious!! Wait a minute, how did you get into the Twilight premiere? Can you get me in to the next one? Pretty please?

Q: How would you describe your musical style?
Greyson:
On the album right now, it’s like pop-rock. We have the dance songs, and rock ballads, and songs that’ll make you cry. There’s just such a wide variety, and that’s what I listen to. I love the way the album is coming along. Great, I think.

Q: Are any songs you’ve written going to be on the album?
Greyson:
We don’t know yet because we’re releasing an EP before we release the album.
Ratha: An “EP” is shorter than an album, usually containing 3-6 songs. It’s longer than a Single Release, but shorter than a traditional album!
Greyson: But yeah, I’ve written a lot on this album. There’s only two songs that I’ve recorded that I [didn't write]. Those are “Papparazzi” and “Fire.” Everything else I wrote.

Q: So they’ll probably bring songs in that other people have written for you to listen to.
Greyson:
Yeah, I think so. Sometimes it’s hard for me to listen, and develop other people’s songs, but I’m definitely going to try.
Ratha: Little known fact, but most singers don’t write their own music. The studios find them songs written by professional songwriters, and the recording artists sing them!

Q: What’s your favorite book of all time?
Greyson:
That’d be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Q: If you could be a character from any book, who would it be?
Greyson:
Oh man, that’s hard. The Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Because he’s weird.
Ratha: I hear you. We all like to bring out our “inner weird” sometimes.

I’ve never actually heard of this guy. But I think that after I listen to a few of his songs, he will be my favorite song artist! I don’t like singers that are “too cool for school” I like the ones that aren’t afraid of goofing off and being thereselfs. That’s the kind of guy I think Greyson is!

HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE MY FRIEND. Exactly like him. My mother just walked behind me, so I asked her, and she agreed. Also, Greyson and I have the same favorite book.

Aww, he’s too young to be famous, he should just live out a normal life, at lest until he’s older. I hope the fame doesn’t go to his head…
