Book Flap: Wimpy Kid & Rats of NIMH Movies & more!

BOOK FLAPThis week, Book Flap (your every-other-Friday book news column) has all the latest news about upcoming books, books becoming movies, and more! It's all part of our first Summer on the Splot!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie & Series Update

Back in February, we brought you the news that Jeff Kinney's best selling series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, was being made into a movie. Well now I've got one better—the stars of the movie!

Diaryofawimpykid_bookfan The main character and diary-keeper, Greg Heffley, will be played by Zachary Gordon, who's previously acted in movies like National Treasure: Book of Secrets, and played the voice of Baby Melman in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Rachel Harris will play Greg's mom.

But you don't need to wait for the movie to get your next Diary of a Wimpy Kid fix. The fourth book in the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, comes out October 12th. To get ready for the book's release while everyone is still enjoying the dog days of summer, there will be a Diary of a Wimpy Kid-themed Ice Cream Truck visiting libraries across the country in the Summer Reading Coast-to-Coast Ice Cream Truck Tour. To see if it's stopping near you, check out the Wimpy Kid website.

FrisbyandratsofnimhRats of NIMH Scurrying to the Movies

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH might be the next classic children's book to make its way to Hollywood. Paramount is in development of a movie based on Robert C. O'Brien's 1971 book. The book tells the story of Mrs. Frisby, a mouse who works to save her home in the field from being destroyed by a plowing farmer, with help from escaped laboratory rats. The story was already adapted to film in 1982 as an animated movie called The Secret of NIMH. But there's no word yet about what the new movie will be like.

What would you rather see—animation or live action?

The_loraxHe Speaks for the Trees on the Big Screen

Dr. Seuss fans know it's the Lorax that speaks for the trees in the environmentally minded book, The Lorax. And now the Lorax is taking his message to the movies. Universal and Illumination Entertainment, the people who brought you the Horton Hears a Who movie, are making The Lorax adaptation, with plans for it to hit theaters March 2, 2012. Why that date? It would have been Dr. Seuss's 108th birthday!

Eclipse_lg Twilight Cast Change

No Book Flap would be complete without an update on what is happening in Twilight World. Planning for the third movie is underway. Eclipse, based on the third book in the series for ages 12 and up by Stephenie Meyer,  brings with it a cast change for Victoria, the nomadic vampire with a grudge against Bella. Rachelle Lefevre who played Victoria in Twilight and New Moon will be replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard in Eclipse.

Check back on August 14th for another edition of Book Flap!

Aliens in the Attic: Interview with Austin Butler

Aliensintheattic This Friday, July 31st, prepare for an invasion. ALIENS. ATTACK. MAINE. And possibly the world. Don't believe me? Check out the official, legitimate, totally approved movie trailer for Aliens in the Attic, the new movie starring Austin Robert Butler, Carter Jenkins, and Ashley Tisdale!

Check out the trailer!

See what I mean? In this movie, Jake (Austin Robert Butler) and his family meet up with his cousins Tom (Carter Jenkins) and Bethany (Ashley Tisdale) and their family for what they think is a peaceful vacation in Maine. However, creepy but somewhat cute aliens have also arrived at their vacation house, and they have OTHER ideas. One of which includes taking over the earth. When the aliens pull out mind-control guns, they find they don't work on kids. So it's up to the kids to save their parents, and the earth before bedtime!

We nabbed an interview with Austin Robert Butler. You may remember him as the heart-throb James from Zoey 101, or Jake from iCarly (one of my absolute favorite episodes was iLike Jake!). Check out our interview. It was outta this world!

Q: Okay, first of all tell me about Aliens in the Attic. Tell me about the plot and describe your character.
Austin:
Well, the movie's about a group of kids who have to defend their home - and the world - from aliens that have landed on their vacation home. The kids find out that the aliens can control their parents, and therefore all the adults, so they have to fight them off themselves. Jake watches too many action movies, so he's really energetic and he wants to be an action hero so he does everything to the extreme. Like if he has to grab something off the floor, he does a dive and roll. So he was really fun to play. I got to do all those Die Hard things that I always wanted to do.

Q: Are you the love interest for Ashley Tisdale?
Austin: No, actually Ashley Tisdale plays my cousin and then Carter Jenkins plays her brother and he's the opposite of me in the story. He's a deep thinker, so he always wants to think about things before we do it, but then I want to just do it and go attack. And he's like, “No, we need to think about this kind of thing.” So there's that contrast between us.

Q: What was it like working with Ashley?
Austin: She was great. We became really close after that. She's so down to earth and so nice. And it's funny, because we were so similar that she would always act like I was her twin, because on set we would compete at who could get tanner, because we were out in the sun so much. And so it was really fun. I love her.

Q: Did you have any preconceived ideas about her with the whole High School Musical phenomenon? Was she like you thought she was going to be?
Austin: Of course I'd seen so much on High School Musical, and so I pictured Ashley to be kind of stuck up or something like that. Because it's such a huge thing you would think that that's how the person would be, but she's nothing like that. You would never even know that she was in High School Musical or anything. She was so down to earth and so nice!

Q: Did she have any of her dogs with her?
Austin: She didn't. Not in New Zealand [where the movie was shot]. She was there for five weeks. So while she was there, she had to go film High School Musical 3, and so they flew her out for five weeks and filmed all her coverage.

[RATHA] Cool! So if she was filming HSM 3 while she was filming Aliens in the Attic . . . wonder if she has the same look in these two movies? I'll have to check!

Q: When you were a little kid, what were your favorite movies? What did you like to watch?
Austin:
I always loved Arnold Schwarzenegger movies like Commando and stuff. And I also love the Die Hard movies. So I've always been really into action movies. Since I was little that was my favorite type of film.

Q: Did they have stunt doubles in this or did you get to do most of your stunts?
Austin:
They had stuntmen there the whole time . . . But there's only one stunt that I didn't do [that the stuntman did] and that was rolling down this huge flight of stairs. The guy who was my stunt double ended up cutting his arm open and so I was really happy I didn't do it. But I did get to do a lot of really cool stunts, so that was great, like jumping off a two-story building type thing. It was really cool.

[RATHA] Yikes! You couldn't pay me a million dollars to jump off a two-story building. Unless . . . maybe you paid me in chocolate . . .

Q: It's not a scary movie. It's kind of a-
Austin: Yeah, it's kind of like E.T.

Q: Sort of alien-friendly.
Austin: Yeah, and it started out more scary. More- I think it would be scarier for kids the first script that I read, but they kind of made it more kid friendly as it's gone on and now they've got Josh Peck doing one of the voices of the aliens I heard. I don't know if that's confidential. I don't know if I should say anything about that, but that's what I heard.

Q: I was reading that you were discovered at the Orange County Fair [in California]. Had you thought about acting before that at all?
Austin:
No. I never thought it was a possibility kind of thing. I'd always loved movies. I remember watching The Good, The Bad and the Ugly when I was like six, and I loved it. And I love movies. I watch them all the time; my dad is a huge movie buff. But it's just one of those things that I never even had the vaguest idea that it could be possible and so when it started to happen, that's I think why I jumped on it so much. When I saw that it could actually happen, I just completely went for it and it worked out.

Q: You've worked on some of the hottest sitcoms. Was that a lot of fun, meeting all these new young stars? Working on Hannah Montana and Zoey 101 and all that?
Austin: It's so cool. The coolest part is when you meet them. I mean these shows are huge, but when you're actually on the show they're just kids! And that's the coolest part for me - that it's just kids are kids. And I love that.

Q: Now you're getting your own show, Ruby and the Rockits. Tell me about that.
Austin: It's a story about two brothers who used to be teen idols. Now they're older and one of them is David Cassidy and he still plays at casinos and stuff, still milking his teen years. And the other brother is Patrick Cassidy and he doesn't want to do it any more. He owns a car dealership, and then I play his son. So he wants me to go to college first and he doesn't want me to go after music right now. But I really want to be a musician. So that's really fun for me because I play the guitar and stuff. I've played guitar and piano for a while, so it's really fun to play music on film.

Q: Now this is going to be on ABC Family?
Austin: Yeah.

Q: And Shaun Cassidy - is he connected with it too?
Austin:
Yeah, he produces and writes it. I love going into Shaun's office and he's got some of the posters of him and his album covers. My mom had posters of him in her room. It's such a surreal experience.

[RATHA: Ooooh . . . dreamy. Check out this poster pin-up of Shaun Cassidy. He used to be a heart-throb when our parents & grandparents were kids!]

Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
Austin: I've got an older sister. She's twenty-two.

Q: So the brother siblings is something new to you.
Austin: Yeah. I've never had a brother. I always thought that it was cool to have a brother. I mean, I love my sister and it's cool, because she was kind of like a second mother. She taught me how to tie my shoes and wash my hair and all that kind of stuff. It was really nice because she's five years older, so she always wanted to be like my mother.

Q: Usually when the younger one is born, that's the older one's baby doll.
Austin: Yeah, she would dress me up. My dad would have to keep her from putting lipstick on me and stuff.

[RATHA] LOL! I wanna see pics!!!

Q: You said that you play guitar and I read that you play piano. How long have you been playing music?
Austin:
I've been playing guitar for I think five years and piano for maybe two.

Q: Do you write music?
Austin: Yeah, a little bit. I haven't as much as I would like to, but I do, especially when I started playing piano, because piano is such a straightforward instrument. It's so- it's not quite as mysterious as the guitar so it kind of opened up music to me.

Q: So Jordan in Ruby - he likes depressing music, so what kind of music do you like?
Austin: I am such a music fiend. I go after so many different types of music. I'm on iTunes constantly just buying new music! When I started off playing guitar I listened to a lot of Jimi Hendrix and the old Led Zeppelin. Lately, I've gotten into more alternative type music like Beck and Rage Against the Machine and stuff.

Q: Now all of those people were playing music before you were even thought of. How did you get introduced to them?
Austin: I had a friend who started playing the guitar around the same time I did and his dad was a real rock and roller. He played guitar when he was little, which was when Jimi Hendrix was around and stuff. So he had all the CDs and then he gave them to my friend and then my friend gave them to me. And that's before I even had an iPod or anything like that so those were like my first CDs. Once I got those I was like, “Well what else is out there?” I started getting into new music and just researching. I'm constantly finding new bands and stuff.

Q: On an average, how many songs do you download a month?
Austin: [Laughs] Oh man. Let's see, I've been trying to not go too crazy. Maybe . . . twenty songs. That's where my paycheck goes, to my music.

Q: What three books would you recommend for a twelve, thirteen, fourteen year old? Books that really impressed you or you really enjoyed?
Austin: Oh man. Okay. Let me see if I can remember their names. The Giver. I absolutely love that book.

[RATHA] I've never read that! I'll have to check it out.

And right now I'm reading 1984 [a classic for ages 12 and up]. I love that book. I'm reading that right now and it's such a political book.

Let's see, what's the third one? Oh! You know what I read when I was little and I loved it was The Time Machine. H.G. Wells.

Thegiver_book      Timemachine

Austin: I love the books that are written a long time ago and it's kind of like, "This guy's been dead for like two hundred years but I'm reading his writing." It's such a thrilling experience.

Q: Is there a literary character that you would love to play in a movie?
Austin:
Ooh. Let's see. I always thought it would be cool to play the kid in Treasure Island. I bet that'd be really fun.

Q: Do you have any most embarrassing moments when you were in school or with your friends?
Austin:
One of my friends spilled a whole milk carton all over my pants once, and it looked like I peed. And I remember having to walk to the office [in school] and I wanted to explain to everyone around that was in the whole auditorium that I didn't pee, but you can't really do that so I had to walk shamefully to the office. They called my mom and she wasn't home, so they had to give me a pair of pants that were way too short on me. And so then I had to live the rest of the day in these tiny pants. That was pretty embarrassing.

[RATHA] OMG! That takes the cake. Sorry Austin, but I was ROTFL reading that one! You would be the winner of our How I Survived Middle School Hall of Shame stories!

Q: Austin thank you so much! It was nice talking to you!
Austin: Alright thank you so much!

Q: Take care.
Austin: Bye!

So there you have it! Are you going to witness the alien invasion?! (i.e. see the movie) If so, let me know what you think. And if you're a fan of Austin Robert Butler, give us a shout in the comments!

Book Review: Dear Dumb Diary Book #8

Dear Dumb Diary Book 8 Oh, WOW.

I mean, I knew there was a series called Dear Dumb Diary. And I knew it was supposed to be funny and witty and relatable. But I finally picked it up the other day and dove in, and was I unprepared for just how hilarious and engrossing and smart it actually was!

Ok, let me start at the beginning. In case you don't know, Dear Dumb Diary is the hilarious journal of Jamie Kelly, a middle schooler who captures all her thoughts and observations in her diary, complete with drawings, which is helpful when she's writing about things like giving Albert Einstein a makeover (he looks quite nice with styled hair) and hosting dog weddings. With earlier titles like Can Adults Become Human? and The Problem With Here Is That It's Where I'm From, I should have expected nothing less.

In Book #8, It's Not My Fault I Know Everything, Jamie has to write a diary as part of her homework assignment. And since there's no way she would ever, ever turn in her ACTUAL diary, she has to double-up on entries. So we readers get to read her real diary as well as the school diary, and it is LOL funny. (Literally, I laughed out loud. A lot!)

Jamie also begins to spend more time with blondwad, aka Angeline, because they are puppy parents-in-law. Which means Jamie's real best friend, Isabella, starts to feel a little left out. And of course, there are appearances by 8th grade cutie Hudson and a whole crop of teachers who exist to torture Jamie. (Or so she would have you believe.)

My first foray into Dear Dumb Diary was a successful one, I must admit. If you like over-the-top, gives-you-side-stitches-from-laughing books, pick up It's Not My Fault I Know Everything, and check out the Dear Dumb Diary web site on The STACKS!

Create a Caption: Oh Brother!

CreateacaptionFor those of you who have brothers or have friends with brothers, don't brothers act like they are invincible? I don't know about you, but ever since I was little, growing up with my older brother, he's always been the take-charge type. Forget about what I wanted to do because it was either his way or the highway.

Even to this day, twenty-some years later, he still thinks like he's some sort of almighty sibling, and I have the picture below to prove it!

ASHLEY & THE ALIENS

Ashley & Robert What would you do if aliens invaded your summer vacation house, turned your boyfriend into a remote-controlled zombie robot, and planned to take over the world? That's what Ashley Tisdale has to deal with in the new adventure movie Aliens in the Attic. In the movie, opening July 31st with a PG rating, Ashley plays Bethany, who finds out she's got bigger problems than a lying boyfriend (Robert Hoffman) when four little space creatures (including one voiced by Drake & Josh's Josh Peck) land on her house.

Although she wasn't there as long as the other actors because of her High School Musical 3 shooting schedule, Ashley had a great time shooting the movie in Auckland, New Zealand. "Every weekend we were going to a different island or going to a different beach and hanging out. The whole cast would hang out all the time, so it was definitely a lot of fun," says Ashley, who went with castmates to see fave band Goodnight Nurse in concert while she was there.

Ashley's own music career is hotter than ever, with the release of her second album Guilty Pleasure on July 28th. "There are a lot of break-up songs," says Ashley, who co-wrote four of the CD's tunes. "It's very personal—everything behind the album is all my idea," she says. "Switch," one of the tracks, is also on the Aliens soundtrack. She plans to do a concert tour to support the album, probably in Europe first.

Between looking for her next acting role and projects to produce, Ashley took time out to appear on an upcoming episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition with the Hampton family of Missouri. "The kids really wanted to meet me as one of their wishes, so I'm going down there to design part of their room, and then also do a concert with my band," she explains.

Ashley has seen her own wishes come true in Hollywood. "At a young age I did not know I'd be where I am today. I was doing commercials and modeling but I always dreamt of doing movies and TV shows," she says. "I've always been very driven," she confides. "And even though I've been in the business for so long and I've had a lot of success with the High School Musical movies I still feel that my career has just begun."

She hopes she can set a good example for kids who want to achieve their goals. "Don't ever limit yourself," she declares. "Keep going no matter what and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. With hard work, you'll definitely get there!"

Find out what Ashley and co-star Robert Hoffman have to say about Aliens in the Attic in this exclusive video!

Writing Prompt: . . . and Zombies

Zombies130 There are a few kinds of characters that are always awesome. Pirates. Vampires. Vampire Pirates. Robots. Ninjas. And my personal favorite: Zombies. Don't know what it is, but I love zombie books, movies, video games, whatever. If I ever find some sweet heavy metal about zombies, that will probably be all I ever listen to for the rest of my life. The Haunting of Derek Stone: City of the Dead looks cool, but there definitely needs to be more zombie books out there.

Dead I like asking “what if.” So in the absence of a dedicated zombie genre, I'd like to propose another game. Add “and zombies” to any book title you can think of, and let's just all imagine the hilarity that would ensue. Examples:

“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Zombies”

“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Zombies”

“The Old Man And the Sea and Zombies”

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Zombies”

Do it! Use your brains! Youuurrr deeelliiccciiouuusss brrraaaiiiinnnnssss . . .

Cool Book Stuff: Switching Places!

Switching_places_130 As someone who's "switched places" with my twin sister occasionally (with limited success!), I'm always interested in reading about characters who trade places with each other, either through some sort of mix-up (like in Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper) or some sort of magic (like Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers). Because hey, if a book character can one day wake up in a cool new world, maybe the rest of us can too!

Princeandpauper So I got to thinking about which characters I'd like to switch places with. At the top of my list is pretty much anyone who has attended Hogwarts, which I suppose means I wouldn't even mind switching with Crabbe or Goyle (ew!). But hey, at least I'd be able to take a Potions class or two!

Next on my list? Amy Cahill from The 39 Clues. She gets to travel the world and uncover mysteries! Sure, she has to deal with her little brother . . . and a few other adults who keep getting in her way, but she's smart and clever, and I'd love to see the world through her eyes.

Tradingplaceswithtanktalbott Another character I'd love to trade places with is Dorothy from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I have a big fascination with the Wicked Witch of the West (don't ask!), and I'd jump at the chance to meet her, and to walk the yellow brick road!

Unless there's some magic going on somewhere though, I'll probably never actually GET to switch places with any of these characters. But I can always read books where characters get to, like Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer, or Trading Places with Tank Talbot by Dori Hillestad Butler. And who knows? Maybe someday I'll wake up in a Gryffindor bed after all.

Which characters would YOU like to trade places with?

Book Review: The Wednesday Wars

Wednesdaywars Middle School is tough enough with all the cliques, classes and homework assignments, but when you think your teacher hates your guts, things become a little bit more complicated. Welcome to Holling Hoodhood's world! Try making it through grade school with that name . . . eek!

While most of his classmates cherish Wednesday afternoons attending their Catholic or Jewish teachings, Holling, being the only Presbyterian in the seventh grade class in the late 1960's, is forced to stay with his teacher Mrs. Baker on Wednesday afternoons. During these excruciatingly long afternoons, Mrs. Baker forces Holling to complete various chores, finish up assignments and possibly worst of all, read Shakespeare.

However throughout the year, after struggling with homework assignments, experiencing utterly embarrassing moments, dealing with problems at home, and enduring amazing triumphs, Holling realizes something special about Mrs. Baker and about himself as well.

I highly recommend The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt to anyone going into or already in middle school/junior high. Schmidt does an amazing job of conveying all the obstacles, struggles and complexities you face during seventh grade. From school bullies to crushes to terrible homework assignments and then craziness at home, The Wednesday Wars is a great coming-of-age novel. While reading this book, you will not only enjoy a great story, but you'll also be encouraged to discover who you really are and what you really want to be.

I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars
