Cool Book Stuff: Switching Places!
As someone who's "switched places" with my twin sister occasionally (with limited success!), I'm always interested in reading about characters who trade places with each other, either through some sort of mix-up (like in Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper) or some sort of magic (like Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers). Because hey, if a book character can one day wake up in a cool new world, maybe the rest of us can too!
So I got to thinking about which characters I'd like to switch places with. At the top of my list is pretty much anyone who has attended Hogwarts, which I suppose means I wouldn't even mind switching with Crabbe or Goyle (ew!). But hey, at least I'd be able to take a Potions class or two!
Next on my list? Amy Cahill from The 39 Clues. She gets to travel the world and uncover mysteries! Sure, she has to deal with her little brother . . . and a few other adults who keep getting in her way, but she's smart and clever, and I'd love to see the world through her eyes.
Another character I'd love to trade places with is Dorothy from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I have a big fascination with the Wicked Witch of the West (don't ask!), and I'd jump at the chance to meet her, and to walk the yellow brick road!
Unless there's some magic going on somewhere though, I'll probably never actually GET to switch places with any of these characters. But I can always read books where characters get to, like Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer, or Trading Places with Tank Talbot by Dori Hillestad Butler. And who knows? Maybe someday I'll wake up in a Gryffindor bed after all.
Which characters would YOU like to trade places with?
