Summer Challenge Live! The Recap
What do Bob Barker, Alex Trebek and Jon Scieszka have in common?
If you guessed that they are all authors of best-selling children's books— well, you'd be wrong! That would only be Jon Scieszka (last name rhymes with Fresca!), who wrote The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Frog Prince Continued, The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Fairy Tales, the Time Warp Trio series, and more. And, he's also the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. (He sure is a busy guy!).
BUT if you guessed that they've all hosted game shows—
You got it right!
Bob Barker was the long-time host of The Price is Right, Alex Trebek hosts Jeopardy, and Jon Scieszka hosted the Summer Challenge Live! game show a week and a half ago, which kicked off the Scholastic Summer Challenge competition right here on THE STACKS.
(In case you don't know what that is, here's a quick re-cap: All summer long, you can join a team and earn points by recording how many minutes you've read, answering poll questions, taking quizzes, and playing games. At the end of the summer, the team with the highest score will decide where Scholastic will donate books for kids in need. Plus, they'll get to brag about how awesome they are! Of course, we had to start the Summer Challenge with a bang, and that's where the Summer Challenge Live! game show came in . . . )
The game show had four teams (Green, Yellow, Blue, and Purple) of two people each earning points for their online team by answering trivia questions about books and authors. The (real! live!) teams in the game show were competing to win the game show and earning starting points for their online Summer Challenge team.
Jon Sieszka started off the entertainment at Summer Challenge Live! even before the cameras got rolling, telling us that the contestants were "crazy, smart people," so we knew we'd be in for a good show.
And he was right —
the teams totally killed it.
Green and blue took early leads.
Then there were video questions from everyone's favorite The 39 Clues authors ("favorite" being all of them!).
Purple jumped on the board with a question about The Tale of Despereaux.
And then Yellow got one of the video questions right!
The tension was so thick you could "cut it with a plastic spork," as jon Sieszka put it.
Are you on the edge of your seat waiting with baited breath to find out the winner?
Well, I'm not telling =P
You'll just have to watch to find out:
Now that you've seen the awesome kick-off, go join the Summer Challenge! At the end of the summer, one team will be victorious, but right now it's anybody's game.
