Author SPLOTlight: Scott Mebus

Scottmebus_130 Who do you get when you combine a fiction author; a music producer for MTV, VH1 and various other networks; a stand-up comedian; and a comedic playwright? Well, besides a person who's always working and probably doesn't have much of a life outside of work, you get none other than the up and coming Scott Mebus.

Actually "up and coming" may be the wrong phrase for describing Scott Mebus. In fact, it turns out that Mebus has been writing and creating music since he was 13, and he's been working in the business we call "show" for quite some time now. I guess I've been out of the loop! Mebus has produced music for TV shows such as MTV's The Real World, MTV's Road Rules, and the Discovery Channel's Outward Bound. Plus, he's already written two young adult books (The Big Happy; Booty Nomad), written a musical, and has created a couple short films.

However, when it comes to children's fiction, Mebus is still somewhat of a rookie — but is learning quickly and is moving up the ranks even quicker. His first book for kids, cleverly entitled Gods of Manhattan, came out April 2008 and has already earned rave reviews from The School Library Journal as well as from many readers who post their recommendations online. (You can read my review right here on The Splot!) The anticipated sequel, Spirits in the Park, arrives in stores May 2009. Until then, let's see what other projects Mebus can dig up.

Wow...
Scott Mebus really is a talented person, and the fact that he's been working at it since he was a teenager really tells us that he worked hard to get where he is now.
