When I think of technology of the future, I automatically think of The Jetsons: Their house is up in the clouds. They drive a flying car that folds up into a suitcase. And they've got a robot maid cleaning up after them — I could desperately use one of those! Unfortunately, none of those conveniences seem to be on their way to becoming reality.
Yet, every so often, I'll see something that makes me think the future is now. This week, it's an article entitled "Human exoskeleton suit helps paralyzed people walk." Having an exoskeleton is like having your skeleton on the outside of your body. Insects and shellfish have exoskeletons in nature. The shell of a crab or lobster is really their version of bones. But the article says that the suit is more like the suit Iron Man wears. It's not just a shell but an electronic technical wonder. People who can't move their legs can wear this exoskeleton suit and the electronic components move the people's legs for them. People who used to be confined to wheelchairs can stand up and walk around.
This device will still be in testing until 2010. But it's already convinced me that we live in the future.
Have you seen anything that makes you think the future you see in science-fiction is already here? What miraculous inventions are you waiting for?
